The Darktown Jazzband is a Stuttgart- based jazz band that has existed since 1958 and was initially dedicated to hot jazz . Currently on the road as a New Darktown jazz band , the formation has expanded the musical spectrum to modern jazz . Meanwhile, a Danish band under the direction of the banjo player Kurt Poulsen operates as The Darktown Jazzband. In the early 1960s, a Dutch band of the same name under the direction of Henk van Dijk was also active.

history

Werner Lener founded the band with Rolf Quasthoff, Walter Ehret, Dieter Riempp, Hans A. Luipold, Ludwig Stimmler and Gerhard Ziegler. 1960 Lener occupied the band he was leading; now Wolfgang Trattner played in place of Quasthoff, Charly Höllering instead of Ehret and Elmar Wippler instead of Ziegler. Between 1962 and 1966, the band performed successfully at the amateur jazz festival in Düsseldorf (first prizes), and between 1964 and 1966 at the Zurich and Vienna Jazz Festival .

In 1974 the group produced their first LP. At the invitation of the Goethe Institute , the band played in Jordan that same year. In the following year, the Darktown Jazzband released the second LP with guest soloists Fatty George , Oscar Klein , Charly Antolini , Jimmy McPartland and Dick Cary . In 1976 and 1977 the band toured Egypt twice at the invitation of the Goethe Institute.

In 1980 the Darktown Jazz Band was re-cast; with Klaus Osterloh and Joe Gallardo , professional musicians now played with the amateurs Lener, Höllering, Stimmler and Wippler. This was followed by a concert recording of the band on Süddeutscher Rundfunk . The band also played at the State Press Ball in Mainz.

In 1984 parts of a performance by the Darktown jazz band with Lars Erstrand were recorded in the Schleyerhalle in Stuttgart . Performances at the jazz festival Villingen VS swingt (1986) and the jazz festival Swinging Hanover in 1988 as well as in the Stuttgart Liederhalle and on jazz cruises in the Mediterranean followed until 1989.

In 1998 Lener re-founded the band as the New Darktown Jazz Band (concert recording at Stuttgart Central Station ); In 1999 the band performed at the Rust Jazz Festival (TV recording) and at the invitation of the German Embassy in Thailand. In 2002 the group played on a jazz cruise on the Danube, in 2004 on the Elbe. The current line-up with broadly trained musicians allows the band a very large musical spectrum, from ragtime and boogie woogie to blues , Dixieland, swing and mainstream jazz to bebop and Latin jazz .
