Eleven year old Hannah Mills from Cleveland recently lost her mother. She is very interested in horses and would like to photograph them in their natural environment for a school project. Since her father has to go abroad on business, he takes Hannah to an old friend on a farm in Nevada . With CJ, the rancher's daughter her age, Hannah goes on a search for the place where the wild horses hang out. The two discover a secret. There is a legend about a wild black mustang who is said to appear as a ghost horse at night and steal the mares from the herds. Many consider this story to be a myth. However, the wild mustang actually exists and changes the lives of the two girls forever, because some unscrupulous animal hunters have targeted him of all people.
