The girl with the red hair , Dutch original title Het meisje met het rode haar , is a Dutch film from 1981. It is based on the novel of the same name by the Dutch writer Theun de Vries from 1956, which in turn is a historical event from that time portrays the National Socialist occupation of the Netherlands . The world premiere took place on September 17, 1981 in the Netherlands, in Germany the film was shown for the first time in February 1982 at the Berlin International Film Festival . Under the English title "The Girl with the Red Hair" the film was shown on January 14, 1983 in New York City .
action
The film depicts the life of the Dutch student Hannie Schaft , who joined the Dutch resistance in her mid- twenties to fight the German occupiers of her homeland. Because of her eye-catching red hair, she is nicknamed “The girl with red hair” ( Het meisje met het rode haar ). After several more or less successful attacks, the German occupiers and Dutch collaborators initially unsuccessfully sought it out, and a few weeks before the end of the war in March 1945, they happened to get online. The film ends with the shooting of Hannie Schaft in the Kennemerduinen near Bloemendaal on April 17, 1945.
Deviation between book and film
In contrast to the book, in which de Vries explains in detail the political motives of Shaft, which ultimately led to the entry into the communist resistance movement Raad van Verzet , Verbong completely dispensed with this aspect.
Recording technology
“The Girl with Red Hair” also attracted attention because of Theo van de Sandes' remarkable camera work. The color photos were filtered using a special technique so that they gave the impression of old film recordings. It is noteworthy that in some scenes the viewer gets the impression that the red hair of the protagonist is particularly bright.
