David Bryant (pianist)

David Bryant (* 1983 in Brooklyn , New York City ) is an American modern jazz musician ( piano ) .

Bryant comes from a musical family and started playing the piano at the age of four. At eight he took part in his first competitions in the field of classical music, such as the Queens College Festival of Music Competition. He also learned the cello and trumpet, and performed with youth symphony and chamber music programs. He attended LaGuardia High School of Music and Arts , where he soon became interested in jazz music. At LaGuardia he played in the Senior Jazz Band and the All-City Jazz Band . As an Outstanding Soloist he was awarded at the Essentially Ellington competition at Lincoln Center ; an invitation to the Monterey Jazz Festival followed . In his senior year he was inducted into the Grammy Foundation's All-American Jazz Big Band. In 2001 he received a scholarship to study at the New England Conservatory . During this time he played with the Boston Jazz Reparatory Orchestra (BJRO), performed at Wally's Jazz Café and Jordan Hall. After graduating in Jazz Performance in 2005 , he moved to New York.

In the following years he worked with musicians such as Marcus Strickland , Steve Davis , Jen Shyu , Eric McPherson , Abraham Burton , as well as Christian McBride , Ravi Coltrane , Roy Haynes , Dave Holland , Wynton Marsalis , Delfeayo Marsalis , Louis Hayes , Steve Coleman , Kenny Wheeler , Bob Brookmeyer and Jimmy Heath . In the field of jazz he was involved in 13 recording sessions between 2006 and 2012.

He should not be confused with the pianist and keyboardist of the same name, who worked with Ornette Coleman in the 1980s .
