David Healy , MBE (born August 5, 1979 in Downpatrick ) is a former Northern Irish football player . He is the record scorer for the Northern Ireland national team .

Career

Healy grew up in Killyleagh and played for the local youth and school team Down Academy before being discovered by Manchester United in the late 1990s . There he ran only in three games, where he was substituted on. He played on loan for Port Vale in 1999/2000 , for which he scored three goals in 16 games. In 2000 he moved to Preston North End on loan . In the 2000/01 season he scored ten times in 26 games; the association took advantage of the purchase option. In the 2001/2002 season he scored ten goals again.

In 2003 he was loaned to Norwich City , for which he scored two goals in 13 games. After returning to Preston North End , Healy scored 15 goals in 42 games in 2003-04. In 2004 he went to Leeds United , where he scored crucial goals after being substituted on. In his first season he became the club's top scorer.

For the 2007/08 season Healy moved to Fulham , where he signed a four-year contract. In the summer break of 2008 he moved within the Premier League to Sunderland AFC ; he signed a contract there until June 30, 2011.

On February 1, 2010 Healy was awarded to the second division club Ipswich Town until the end of the season . In the 2010/11 season he was loaned to the second division Doncaster Rovers .

He then moved to the Scottish Premier League for the Glasgow Rangers on a free transfer from Sunderland AFC . After their bankruptcy, he was initially without a club for the 2012/13 season. On August 23, 2012 he was able to hire the English third division club FC Bury .

National team

Healy is the record scorer for the Northern Ireland national team . He also made himself unforgettable by helping his team to their first home win against England since 1927 in Northern Ireland's 1-0 win over England at Windsor Park in September 2005 . On September 6, 2006, he scored all three goals for a 3-2 win against Spain in the qualifying game for the 2008 European Championship . Most recently, George Best managed a hat trick in Belfast .

In the qualifying game in Liechtenstein on March 24, 2007, he again managed a hat trick when he scored three times between the 52nd and 83rd minute. Four days later, he scored twice against Sweden . He also scored two goals against Liechtenstein on August 22, 2007. With a total of 13 goals, he was the top scorer in the entire qualification for the Euro 2008. In the qualifying rounds for the Euro 2004 and Euro 2012 he did not score a single goal.

On December 3, 2013, he announced his retirement as a professional footballer. He has played a total of 95 international matches, more than any other Northern Irish field player; he scored 36 goals. He played his last international match on March 26, 2013 in the 2-0 defeat by Israel .
