David Edward Johnson (born October 23, 1951 in Liverpool ) is a former English football player . Between 1975 and 1980 he played eight international matches (six goals) for England and took part in the 1980 European Football Championship . With Liverpool FC he was four times English champion and three times national championship winner.

Player career

Everton FC (1969–1971)

David Johnson began his professional career with his youth club Everton , which were English champions in 1970 without a use of the young player . He played his first league games in the Football League First Division in 1970/71 . In the 1971/72 season he scored nine goals in twenty-seven league games. Everton had not been able to build on the good performances of the championship season and only found themselves in the lower midfield of the table.

Ipswich Town (1972-1976)

In November 1972 Johnson moved to league rivals Ipswich Town and finished the 1972/73 season in fourth. In the 1973/74 UEFA Cup he failed with his team after successes over Real Madrid , Lazio Rome and FC Twente Enschede in the quarter-finals at 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig . 1973/74 Johnson scored thirteen league goals and confirmed with his team the league placement from the previous year. The performance in the First Division was increased in 1974/75 with third place, only two points behind the champions Derby County .

Liverpool FC (1976–1982)

At the beginning of the 1976/77 season, the 24-year-old David Johnson moved to reigning champions Liverpool FC . In addition to defending their title in the league, Liverpool won the European Cup for the first time in 1976/77 . In the final, the team defeated the German champions Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-1 without David Johnson . After defending the title in the European Cup in 1977/78 (1-0 against Club Brugge ), Johnson's team (30 league games / 16 goals) won the English championship again in 1979 . In the First Division 1979/80 Johnson scored twenty-one league goals and won the championship for the third time. This was followed by other titles in the 1980/81 European Cup (1-0 against Real Madrid), the Football League First Division 1981/82 and in the 1980/81 and 1981/82 League Cup .

In August 1982 he returned to Everton, but could not build on his earlier accuracy. In 1985 he ended his playing career.

English national team (1975–1980)

On May 21, 1975, the 23-year-old David Johnson made his debut in the English national team in a 2-2 draw against Wales and scored his first two goals directly. After two more internationals and one goal, he was not used again by national coach Don Revie . His next international match took place under Ron Greenwood on February 6, 1980 in a 2-0 home win against Ireland. In the summer he was appointed to the English European Championship squad by Greenwood . Johnson was used in the opening game against Belgium (1-1), but was then disregarded and was eliminated with England after the preliminary round of the 1980 European Football Championship .
