David Pearson (born December 22, 1934 in Whitney , South Carolina , † November 12, 2018 in Spartanburg , South Carolina) was an American NASCAR racing driver and three-time champion in the Winston Cup .

Known by the nickname "Silver Fox", Pearson made his debut in NASCAR's Grand National Series in the 1960 season and immediately won the title of Rookie of the Year . In the course of his career, he won the championship three times in the series, in 1966, 1968 and 1969. He is considered one of the greatest NASCAR drivers, which is due, among other things, to duels with Richard Petty , another NASCAR legend . Between August 8, 1963 and June 12, 1977 they finished 63 races in the first two places, with Pearson with 33 wins just emerged as the winner of the duel.

One of the most famous incidents happened with the Daytona 500 early in the 1976 season when Pearson and Petty went bumper to bumper on the final lap. When their cars came into hard contact, they both turned and hit the perimeter wall. Just a few hundred meters from the finish, Petty was in his car, the engine of which had stopped and could not be restarted. Pearson's engine was still running and so he secured victory.

After 26 seasons, Pearson ended his career after the 1986 season. Behind Richard Petty, he was the driver with the second highest number of wins and pole positions.
