Feyenoord Rotterdam

De Klassieker ( German : The Classic ) is the name of the derby in Dutch football between Ajax Amsterdam and Feyenoord Rotterdam . The games between the two teams enjoy a high number of spectators and are among the most important games of the respective season for both fan groups. The record number of spectators for this derby was set on January 9, 1966 in Rotterdam. At that time, 65,562 spectators attended the game between the two rivals.

The first meeting of the two teams took place on October 9, 1921. The game, played in Rotterdam, ended 2-2. In the second leg in Amsterdam on March 5, 1922, Ajax kept the upper hand 2-0 and was able to win the classic for the first time. Feyenoord's first win in the derby was on January 21, 1923. It was also the first away win for one of the two teams in the classic. In the following duel, Ajax was also able to win in Rotterdam. In the 1978/79 season, on October 28, 1978, there was the only 0-0 in the history of this encounter; otherwise there was always at least one hit per game.

It is often very explosive when players have switched from one rival to the other and then meet their ex-team with their new team. Again and again there are unfair gestures by the corresponding fan communities.

Disputes outside the field of play

At the classic, there are always arguments between the supporters of both teams. On March 23, 1997, one of these gatherings led to major riots, known among fan communities as the "Battle of Beverwijk ". At that time, hooligans met in the village of Beverwijk to fight. An Ajax fan was killed. In response to this event, Feyenoord and Ajax agreed to play the two league games of the 1997/98 season to the exclusion of the fans.
