On behalf of the Federate Correctional Authority, a group of convicted hackers and their supervisor Capra are supposed to fix the malfunction of an unmanned space freighter. Once on board, the hackers try to shut down the faulty programs. In doing so, they come across the guard program Iam, which begins to kill the hackers one after the other and integrate their minds into its system. He does this with the help of the on-board systems and the drug-turned Capra. Ultimately, only Qaeda and James remain. Kaida tries to switch off the individual processes of Iam with the help of its own avatar program by killing them. Then she wants to destroy the computer core, which consists of a kind of biomass. In the process, however, Kaida is killed, but her blood combines with the biomass of the computer core. Meanwhile, the previously integrated hackers or their virtual existences in the system kill the last processes of Iam. James, the only one who survived, is able to make an emergency call. Ten years later, James is the captain of the freighter, which has 1,200 passengers on board and is on the edge of the solar system . Kaida has now taken on the role of the computer system.

Director David Hewlett reported in an interview that he was fascinated by artificial intelligence like HAL 9000 from the 2001 film : A Space Odyssey . Above all, the idea of what would happen if the AI were the winner in the fight against humans. This gave rise to the idea for the film Debug . Filming took place at Pinewood Toronto Studios .

The film premiered at the Monsters of Film film festival on October 9, 2014 in Stockholm . The film was released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc in the UK on November 3, 2014 . In the USA the publication took place on June 12, 2015, in Germany two days later on March 14, 2015.
reception
The film received mostly negative reviews. The film currently has 4.3 points at the IMDb (as of September 2, 2018). Peter Osteried criticized Kino-zeit.de for the fact that the film seemed too sterile, which would not create a mood. On the positive side, he noted that the effects would look decent for a Canadian low-budget production .
