The North dike is a dyke association based in the north . It forms an administrative community in personal union with the North Drainage Association.

Association area

The Deichverband is responsible for an area of ​​around 23,000  hectares in the Aurich district in East Frisia . This protected area, which includes all plots of land located under the protection of the main dikes up to a height of +5.00 m above sea ​​level including the higher ground elevations within this area, extends over the city of Norden and the communities of Osteel , Leezdorf , Großheide , Dornum , Hagermarsch , Hage , Lütetsburg , Halbemond and Berumbur .

The main dyke line in the area of ​​responsibility of the north dike is 32.5 kilometers long. It extends from the general plan kilometer 166.5 in the north of the Störtbecker dike on the Leybucht to the general plan kilometer 199.0 between Neßmersiel and Dornumersiel . The main dike line is divided into four sections.

In addition to the main dike line, the dike association is also responsible for a second dyke line in the area of ​​the Mandepolder, Lütetsburger Polder, Neßmerpolder, Westerpolder, Hampolder, Osterneßmersieler Polder and Kuchenbäckerpolder in the north of the association area.

The association area of ​​Deichacht Norden borders in the south on the association area of Deichacht Krummhörn and in the east on the association area of Deichacht Esens-Harlingerland .

tasks

The dike association has the task of protecting properties in the association area from storm surges . To this end, he maintains the dikes in the association area.

Most of the dyke sections are grazed by sheep, which permanently ensures a short, closed and firm sward, which is important for dyke safety. The north dike maintains two dyke sheep farms , which are responsible for the areas to the west and east of Easter March .

Association structure

The association is represented by a committee that is elected by the association members. The committee consists of twelve members. For its part, it elects a board of five members. A personal representative is also elected for each committee and board member.

Members of the association are all landowners and leaseholders of the properties located in the association area.
