VG Airlines SA ( trading as Delsey Airlines from August 2002 ) was a short-lived Belgian airline . The company ceased operations in October 2002.

history

The airline was founded in Antwerp at the beginning of 2002 by Freddy Van Gaever , who previously worked as managing director at European Air Transport (EAT) and VLM Airlines . In addition to Van Gaever, the Belgian entrepreneur Antonius Gram, the owner of the case manufacturer Delsey , had a stake in the company. VG Airlines acquired the liner rights for some routes from Brussels to the USA that had previously been operated by the insolvent Sabena . The company leased three Airbus A330 aircraft in the spring of 2002 . Until the start of its own scheduled flight operations, the machines were used on charter flights on behalf of Air Holland . On May 23, 2002, scheduled services from Brussels-Zaventem Airport to New York began . Other transatlantic destinations served by Brussels were Boston (from June 20) and Los Angeles (from June 30). At the same time, VG Airlines had signed a cooperation agreement with Armenian Airlines and, together with them, set up an extension of the Los Angeles route via Brussels to Yerevan Airport in Armenia . As early as the beginning of summer 2002, VG Airlines ran into economic difficulties. Due to problems with the American booking system , some of the return flights from the USA were only 25 percent full. There were also outstanding receivables from Air Holland , which was unable to pay for the charter services it had used due to its own financial situation. In order to avert the impending insolvency of VG Airlines , Antonius Gram invested additional capital and took over the airline entirely on August 8, 2002. The company was then renamed Delsey Airlines that same month . The company remained unprofitable. On October 24, 2002, it ceased flight operations for economic reasons. Delsey Airlines was declared bankrupt on November 5, 2002 .
