Demography in Garbsen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Garbsen is the second most populous city in the Hanover region .

Population development

In the Middle Ages and the early modern period was Garbsen a small village with a few dozen inhabitants. The population grew slowly and declined during the numerous wars, epidemics and famine. Due to industrialization in the 20th century, population growth accelerated. In 1910 only 757 people lived in the community, by 1966 there were 11,467. With the incorporation of Havelse (11,732 inhabitants in 1966), the population rose to 23,199 on January 1, 1967.

The merger with numerous surrounding communities on March 1, 1974 brought an increase from 29,043 people to over 56,000 inhabitants. On September 30, 2005, the “ official population ” for Garbsen was 63,097 according to an update by the Lower Saxony State Office for Statistics (only main residences and after comparison with the other state offices).

The following overview shows the number of inhabitants according to the respective territorial status. 1730 is an estimate, then census results (¹) or official updates from the State Statistical Office. From 1871, the information relates to the “local population”, from 1925 to the resident population and since 1987 to the “population at the location of the main residence”. Before 1871, the number of inhabitants was determined according to inconsistent survey procedures.

migration

Arrivals and departures

Garbsen has many immigrants from other German cities (mostly Hanover region ) as well as many migrants from abroad. This is partly due to the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University of Hanover in Hanover. However, Garbsen also has some departures (often to Hanover).

If one looks at the migration balances from immigration and emigration, differentiated according to districts and according to migration source areas (outside the Hanover and Garbsen region), Auf der Horst, Meyenfeld and Schloß Ricklingen gain population from all three areas. Altgarbsen , Havelse and Berenbostel gain population through external migration, but lose inhabitants to the other parts of the city. In Garbsen-Mitte, Osterwald UE and Stelingen, the migration balance for 2017 was negative overall. Almost a third (33.2%) of Garbsen's residents have only settled in the city in the last 10 years. 12.5% of the population live in Garbsen for more than 50 years.
