occupation

The Alpine King and the Misanthrope is a film adaptation of Ferdinand Raimund 's magic game of the same name , published in 1965 . The well-known German cameraman Günther Anders took care of the cinematic implementation of a prominent Burgtheater production by Rudolf Steinböck . The brothers Paul and Attila Hörbiger , who rarely appear together in front of the camera, play the two main roles of Astragalus and Rappelkopf.

action

Ever since Rappelkopf was deceived by a fraudster, he has become the epitome of a suspicious, odd-headed misanthropist and family disgust. His wife and daughter as well as the servants suffer from his bad moods, accusations and insinuations. The misanthropist smells treason and intrigue everywhere, and so one day he takes refuge in a lonely charcoal burner hut. His family, who suffered badly from the curmudgeon , are nevertheless worried and fear for his life. The kind, alpine mountain spirit Astragalus, the king of the Alps, wants to lead the curmudgeon out of his constant displeasure and his misanthropy.

He promises a remedy and makes Rappelkopf an offer that he cannot refuse: He should become his alter ego, slip into another, better figure. In the guise of his brother-in-law, the tyrant is supposed to visit his family to convince himself of their loyalty and love. The King of the Alps, on the other hand, wants to appear as a rattle head, as a living mirror of the true family despot, in order to morally purify them based on self-knowledge. The cure of the Alpine King proves to be extremely instructive: The family is healed and you can find each other again. And then a son-in-law appears as if from a picture book, and Rappelkopf's real brother-in-law saves the family fortune.
