content

The film describes the life and work of Bernd Eichinger in comments from friends, companions and employees. It is less of a critical assessment than a personal look at the work of the film producer. Eichinger's breakthrough with Der Name der Rose as an international producer, the takeover of Constantin and expansion into one of the most successful German film distributors, his lifestyle, education and childhood, the move to Hollywood, the Constantin share listing, his departure from the media company and his further path as a filmmaker, screenwriter and freelance producer are highlighted. It becomes clear that the glamor and tragedy of filmmaking are reflected in an extraordinary way in Eichinger's figure. In particular, the film describes Eichinger's obsessive lifestyle and his desire to be recognized as an artist. Speeches, photos and rare film documents are compiled into a portrait.

The filmmakers have described the film as a film made by friends for friends. Have a say: Eichinger's daughter Nina, his wife Katja, his ex-girlfriends Katja Flint and Hannelore Elsner, the actors Til Schweiger, Moritz Bleibtreu, Nina Hoss and Bruno Ganz; the filmmakers and producers Günter Rohrbach, Wolfgang Petersen, Roland Emmerich, Tom Tykwer, Uli Edel, Herman Weigel, Jean-Jacques Annaud, Oliver Berben, Michael 'Bully' Herbig, Martin Moszkowicz and Robert Kulcer, and many others. For the film, a total of over 50 interviews were conducted in the USA and Germany. The film is also based on interviews with filmmakers Husam Chadat and German Kral from 2000, who interviewed Bernd Eichinger during his lifetime in Los Angeles and during the Cannes Film Festival and who provided their original material for this film. In addition, interviews with Bernd Eichinger from various other years were used for the film. All other interviews were conducted by Stephanie Dresbach, Kiki Martins, Eckhart Schmidt, David Dietl and Carlos Gerstenhauer.

Reviews

  • “Of course, the result was not a film that made great efforts to achieve objectivity that would allow critics or even enemies of Bernd to have their say - or paint a completely different picture of him than what he himself designed so carefully and persistently. Rather, you can feel the desire of the makers and the numerous interviewees to tell the world a little more about this man, whom they knew very well - and for the most part also very much respected, admired, loved. ” - Süddeutsche Zeitung
  • “The documentary turned into a bow to Eichinger - without degenerating into adulation. A personal and touching film that gives an idea of what Eichinger's colleagues, friends and family - and also the German cinema world - have lost with him. ” - Die Welt
  • “'Der Bernd' was created as a collage of retrospectives, memories and, in some cases, never-before-seen pictures. The cool, hard-working, funny atomic explosion ” - Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung
