The Firebird (original title: Pták Ohnivák ) is a Czech- German fairy tale film by Václav Vorlíček from 1997 based on a fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm . The film premiered in Germany on March 2, 2000.

action

Prince Afron is on his way to see King Jorgen with his little brother Otmar, to whom he is supposed to bring the fabulous firebird, which only sings when the moon is full, as a gift for his collection of curiosities . The daughter of King Jorgens, the beautiful Princess Elena, is to be married in the meantime. Afron asks for her hand, which leads to an argument with her admirer Prince Wolf from the Kingdom of the North. In the midst of the dispute, the dark wizard Skeleton, who is the master of lightning, thunderstorms and storms, appears and kidnaps the coveted princess to the end of the world.

Mother Jadwiga reveals to Prince Afron that he has to get to King Garmon's flying horse Goldmane in order to be able to follow the magician. Then she gives him a magical bracelet that can shoot ropes and brews a magic potion that can be used to understand the language of the animals, then the brothers leave. During the trip they hear a hawk crying for help , free him from human hands and win a loyal friend. When they arrive in King Garmon's land, they spot his castle, where black mourning flags are blowing. The king has died. Afron secretly seeks out the wonderful horse, but is caught and is said to receive the death penalty. However, the queen intervenes. She promises to show the prince mercy if he fetches the water of life for her from the Mortuna Gorge, because only then could her deceased husband return.

So the two brothers set off and reach the notorious gorge of the dead they want to descend. Otmar falls, but can be caught by a shot from the bracelet. Once at the bottom, Afron wants to draw from the magical water, whereupon a huge tentacle rises from the lake, attacks it and steals the frost from it. The feathered friend helps them out by getting the magic piece back. With the life-giving water, the warriors return to the castle, receive the flying horse in gratitude and set off for the castle of the dark wizard.

King Jorgen is meanwhile seriously ill due to the disappearance of his daughter. Only the song of the firebird can save its life. Skeleton knows about it, so visits him again and steals the miracle animal in order to force the princess to say yes to the marriage. Meanwhile, Afron is led by a runaway dog to a secret passage through which he can penetrate the interior of the black lock. He finds Elena and gets the secret of the dark from one of the guard dogs mistreated by the lord of the castle. Back out of the castle, he and his brother go to a huge mountain, in which Skeleton's immortality, his heart, is said to be locked. With the help of a crystal from the wizard's possession, shooting lightning, they advance into the interior of the mountain, where Otmar falls into a fatal fire pit. Deeper in the mountain, Afron then finds the gloomy beating heart. With a rope from the magic circlet, he snatches it from the rock, brings it to Skeleton and smashes it before his eyes, whereupon it disappears.

The freed princess as well as the firebird are ridden home on the gold-maned horse. On the way back, however, they are attacked by Prince Wolf, who is striving for fame and power, and his servants, as a result of which Afron loses his life. The princess threatens the evil prince with death and orders her not to tell her father. Jadwiga later finds the lifeless Afron. She instructs the hawk to fetch something from the water of life with a small piece of cloth. The revived can arrive at the castle just in time, where he gets into a duel with the adversary, in the course of which the villain is thrown down the castle wall by the little hawk. In the evening, under the full moon, the firebird heals the king with its silvery song and the princess wishes to marry the hero.

criticism

For the lexicon of international films , The Firebird was a “formally ambitious, solidly played fairy tale film that entertains not only children but also adult friends of the fantasy genre. Despite the eerie atmosphere at times, the romantic adventure story is also suitable for smaller children. "
