A group of Siberian farmers seek refuge in the American embassy in Moscow because they are persecuted in the Soviet Union for their religious beliefs. For political reasons, the ambassador wants to turn the people away again, which the Cardinal and Archbishop of Mohilew, who has also been at the embassy for years, has heard. When he tries to accompany her at risk of death, a dispute arises with the ambassador who wants to prevent this.

The Condor Film AG of Heinrich Fueter realized this production on behalf of the Swiss and German television. Edzard Schaper wrote the screenplay based on his own book, which was based on the fate of the Hungarian Cardinal József Mindszenty . For Nicolas Gessner it was the first feature film. In addition to Mathias Wieman and Willy Birgel , who embodied the main roles, a number of other actors from the Schauspielhaus Zürich were available.
