The last one turns the light off! is a German tragic comedy from 2007, directed by Clemens Schönborn , who also wrote the script together with Knud Kohr . The feature film produced by Kaminski.Stiehm.Film.GmbH on behalf of ZDF for the series Das kleine Fernsehspiel reports on three unemployed builders in Berlin who attend a language course to learn Norwegian and then find work in Norway .

action

“God dag, everyone. Hva heter Du? ”20 Berlin construction workers are learning Norwegian and going back to school. They want to emigrate to the land of the fjords because they can no longer find work in Germany. German craftsmen are in demand in Norway, and so the men decided to go there. You will learn the foreign language every day for eight weeks. The employment office pays them for the language course, and an employment agency places them with a Norwegian employer. So they plan to leave their homeland. Maybe for a few years, maybe forever. Every day they meet in class and in the evening mostly for a beer. Some grumble at the guest workers who, in their opinion, are taking their jobs away from them.

One of the men is Silvio, 38, a carpenter. His girlfriend finds his decision to go away right. But Silvio can't cope with it: does she want to get rid of him? Norbert, the oldest in the course and formerly an independent master, is a desperate optimist whose house is already being evicted. He prefers to keep this from the others rather than admitting that he is not in control of something. His wife Karin doesn't want to emigrate with him, but he doesn't want to admit that either. Micha, an introverted bricklayer, takes care of everything necessary, nothing keeps him in Germany anymore. He of all people now runs into his great love Ella.

When the language course is over and the departure to Norway is imminent, Silvio, Norbert and Micha want to get drunk again, but are completely broke. In the ultimately successful nightly search for a bottle of grain that Micha had walled in a skyscraper years earlier, the three demolish walls on several floors, but are not held accountable for this.

On the day of departure, Silvio decides to stay in Berlin and takes a job as a temporary worker in a fast food restaurant. Micha and Norbert are on their way to Norway; Ella joins them at the last minute.

The director about his film

“The feeling of being fed up with everything is a good reason for a construction worker to emigrate, and for a director the best reason to make a film. I have a Norwegian course for construction workers in the neighborhood. The men I met two years ago while fetching bread rolls have long been in Tromsö, Sommerlatten or anywhere else up north. We have immortalized some of them: 'Michael Schumacher is in Monaco and I'm supposed to pay taxes here! I'm not stupid!' Straight out! I hope the film is as well. "

Reviews

“With 'The last one turns off the light!' the young director succeeded in creating a tragic comedy about modern unemployment, about the gentle terror of monotony, the dynamism of the siding and the minima amoralia of the globalized world of work “[...] The sympathetic cast, supplemented by many lay people, gives the pretty laconic and sometimes very funny Comedy always has a credible color scheme: Anyone who has landed at Hartz IV looks like that too. [...] Clemens Schönborn sets a milestone on the seldom - far too seldom - plowed terrain of German workers' comedy. ( Adolf Grimme Prize Jury 2008)

“A comedy about men who seem to be no longer needed in their homeland, and about their wives, who are obviously quite casual about the separation. The 'guest worker film' of a different kind questions prejudices and clichés in a variety of ways, but clearly suffers from narrative originality. "
