The Avengers of California (original title: The Master Gunfighter ) is an American western from 1975. It is a remake of the Japanese film Goyokin from 1969.

Santa Barbara , California , in 1836: California is about to become a member of the United States . American settlers and the government are discriminating against Mexicans and taking their land from them by force of arms and all available legal tricks. As a result, Latin American landowners and ranchers feel threatened. They plan to steal a large shipload of gold from the US government. In order not to be caught themselves, they also want to massacre the Chumash Indians at the same time. Finley McCloud, a master of the samurai sword and excellent gunslinger, tries to prevent this from happening and to save his family to ultimately kill the culprits.

The world premiere of the film was on October 3, 1975. The film was released in Germany on October 21, 1976.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films found the film to be “a rather strange mixture of clichés from the spaghetti western, samurai and kung fu cinema, which also works with strong stylizations”, and noted: “At least in the (shortened) German one The whole thing seems rather ridiculous for a long time. ” Variety came to a similar conclusion:“ A strange mixture of amateurish story and skillful production values. ”

At the Golden Globe Awards in 1976 , Barbara Carrera was nominated for Best Young Actress.
