action
- Act 1 - A Hungarian farmhouse parlor
It has become quiet around the well-known violinist Pali, who also became known as the Gypsy Primate. He has been married three times and has 16 children. The number of his illegitimate children is unknown. He was currently teaching some of his children the violin. He is secretly planning another marriage with his niece Juliska. However, she already loves Laczi, a son of Palis. Even without this conflict, the relationship between father and son is tense. The son, who, like his father, is musically gifted, studied music in Paris. There he got to know musical forms and works of which his father has no idea. This contrast is also reflected in the musical appearance of the two. While the father plays and loves the familiar gypsy music, the son plays works by classical masters as well as more modern pieces. Because of this contrast, father and son fell apart. When Pali is offered an offer as first violinist in Paris, he initially declines, also because he connects Paris with an earlier unhappy love. But when he hears that Laczi should receive the post after his (Palis) rejection, he accepts the offer.
- Act 2 - Ballroom in the Palais Irini, Paris
Palis plays at the feast of Count Irini. In doing so, he is surprised and annoyed to find that the conductor of the count's house orchestra is his unloved son Laczi. Among the guests is Juliska, with whom Pali would like to become engaged immediately after the party. But he is not alone with this plan. The host, Count Irini, also had such thoughts. Juliska, however, is neither enthusiastic about one nor the other marriage candidate because she is in love with Laczi. Musically, the evening turns out to be disappointing for Pali. He plays his beloved old gypsy tunes with devotion and is horrified to see that this music does not go down well with the audience. Instead, the Count's orchestra and his son Laczi are celebrated for their modern music.
- 3rd act - boudoir in the Palais Irini, Paris
After this disappointment, Pali retires to his room. His plans to marry Juliska have also failed. In the count's grandmother, Pali recognizes his former unhappy love from days long past. This mediates between the divided parties and finally Laczi and Juliska become engaged. At the same time, Count Irini and Sari became engaged to their daughter Palis. He realizes that his music is out of date and no longer wanted. He now recognizes the abilities of his son Laczi and is reconciled with him. At the same time he throws his violin into the fire of his fireplace to symbolically demonstrate the end of his musically active time.
