action

The young high school football player Stefen Djordjevic dreams of turning his back on his hometown, the dreary Ampipe, Pennsylvania. While his father and brother earn a living at the city's run-down steel mill, he plans to go to college and study engineering on a football scholarship. But Stefen is playing poker and carelessly rejects the first offers, since after the high point of the season - a game against the so far undefeated football team from Walnut Heights - he expects better chances at a renowned college. But the plan goes wrong. The team, in the lead, loses seconds before the end of the game. Stefen and Coach Nickerson clash in the locker room. When he defends a teammate and accuses the coach of a strategic error, he is thrown out of the team.

Stefen lets himself get full on the evening of the game and riot, without first knowing it, in front of his trainer's house. Since this catches him doing it, Stefen's attempts to apologize are in vain. He is no longer part of the team and is not allowed to appear in the last game of the season. This has serious consequences, as no college is interested in the young football player anymore. Stefens last support is his girlfriend Lisa. Even though she knows that if Stefen goes to college, she will be left behind, she tries everything to help her boyfriend. She talks to Nickerson's wife and ultimately gets Nickerson to forgive Stefen and admit his mistake. Now that he is a college team coach, he offers Stefen a place at California Polytechnic State University .
