The crazy professor (original title: The Nutty Professor ) is an American comedy film from 1963. This parody of " Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde “Theme was the fourth film in which Jerry Lewis not only starred, but also directed and written the film .
action
The eccentric, clumsy and rather unsightly chemistry professor Julius Kelp is not taken seriously by either his students or his colleagues. Since he has secretly fallen in love with his student Stella Purdy, he tries everything possible to impress her. Since most efforts in the sporting field are unsuccessful, he tries to achieve the desired effect with the help of chemistry, and in the process accidentally discovers a means with which he can transform himself into the attractive, but also cheeky, arrogant macho Buddy Love. Buddy Love becomes the center of the campus, loved and revered by everyone, who causes a sensation with his singing in the nightclub.
The transformation agent has only a limited effect, so that kelp is forced to lead a double life, which is made more difficult by the fact that Stella has fallen in love with Buddy Love. At the same time, however, she is disgusted by Buddy's cocky demeanor and finds trust in the more sensitive Professor Kelp. As the duration of the drug's effect gets shorter and shorter, Buddy inevitably has to reveal his true colors.
Final scene: Kelp and Stella become a couple. For "special occasions now and then", Stella has secured a few bottles of the transformation agent with a wink.
reception
The Mad Professor is widely considered Lewis' best film, which is probably also because the film is less eccentric than his other works. The character Buddy Love in particular was a topic of conversation, as many saw him as a caricature of his former partner Dean Martin . Lewis regularly denied these assumptions.
Professor Kelp, in turn, was the model for the character Professor Frink in the animated series The Simpsons .
In 1996, Eddie Murphy starred in a remake that was produced by Jerry Lewis.

Reviews
“Slapstick film with Jerry Lewis in a double role, which the 'Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde 'issue. Far more meaningful in the plot and its resolution than previous comedies by Lewis, not only the horror cinema of those years, but also the type of 'American Boy' is glossed over in a largely amusing way. "
