The Reichspostdampfer Derfflinger was the eleventh and last ship of the general class of the North German Lloyd (NDL) for the service to East Asia and Australia. The ship was named after Georg von Derfflinger (1606–1695), the electoral Brandenburg field marshal and governor of Pomerania .

The Derfflinger was one of the four ships of the class that came back into service with the NDL after the First World War.

history

The Derfflinger was the last ship of the general class. She was the fifth ship of the class delivered by the Schichau shipyard in Danzig, which it completed in 1908 for 4.42 million gold marks . On May 9, 1908, the Derfflinger started her maiden voyage to New York , which was followed by a second voyage in June 1908 and a third in June 1913. On July 1, 1908, it was first used as a Reichspostdampfer to East Asia .

At the beginning of the First World War in August 1914, the Derfflinger was on her way back from Port Said and was attacked by the British. The Derfflinger was used under the new name Huntsgreen by the British from 1915, most recently by the Stelp & Leighton shipping company.

In 1923, the NDL bought back the former Derfflinger . After repairs and modifications, measured at 9162 GRT, the ship now had facilities for 811 passengers only in the II and III. Class. On September 20, 1923, Derfflinger started her first post-war trip for the NDL to New York. In January 1924 she was also used again in East Asia. In February 1927 the ship was rebuilt and received a passenger facility with a cabin, tourist and III. Class.

On July 16, 1929, the Derfflinger ran aground in the Yellow Sea near Hsian Kung Tau. Passengers and crew had to be removed, but the ship could be brought to Tsingtau for repairs.

On November 12, 1931, the ship was able to rescue the crew of the British sloop HMS Petersfield, which had run aground, in the Yangtze estuary in very bad weather . Among those rescued was the British Commander in Chief for China, Sir Howard Kelly, with his family.

Derfflinger was launched in May 1932 and sold for demolition in 1933.
