Detlef Michel (born October 13, 1955 in Berlin ) is a former German athlete who - starting for the GDR - was one of the world's best javelin throwers in the 1980s . His greatest success was winning the title at the world championships in 1983 .

Life

He took fourth place at the European Championships in Prague in 1978 ( 85.46 m - 73.74 - 79.86 - 78.10 - invalid - 81.36). In Moscow he did not get beyond qualification at the 1980 Olympic Games . The following year he took first place in the European Cup and second place in the World Cup. Michel won his first international medal with bronze at the European Championships in Athens in 1982 (invalid - 72.72 - 84.36 - 81.36 - 86.46 - 89.32 m ).

In Helsinki he was able to win gold at the first world championships in 1983 (89.48 m, in qualification 90.40 m), defeating world record holder Tom Petranoff . The 1984 Olympic Games escaped him because of the boycott of the GDR. In 1986 he became vice European champion in Stuttgart ( 81.90 m - 79.74 - 78.28 - 74.72 - 72.32 - invalid). In 1988 he took part in his second Olympic Games in Seoul , but did not reach the final.

At the championships of the GDR he won seven titles (1975, 1979, 1980, 1982, 1983, 1986 and 1987) and was runner-up three times (1978, 1981 and 1984). In 1990 he retired from active sports.

In 1984 he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver for his sporting success .

Detlef Michel started for TSC Berlin and OSC Berlin and trained with Peter Börner . At that time he was 1.84 m tall and weighed 93 kg. In the documents on state doping in the GDR that became public after the fall of the Wall , the name of Michel was found among the doped athletes. The trained gas-water plumber worked for a construction company after finishing his sports career. In 2007 he opened a fitness center in Berlin.
