Christian Detlev Jürgen Joachim Graf zu Rantzau (born June 14, 1930 in Göttingen ) is a former German diplomat who was last permanent representative at the United Nations in New York City from 1990 to 1995 .

Life

Detlev Graf zu Rantzau, a son of the naval officer Kurt Graf zu Rantzau, came from the noble Rantzau family and studied law and political science at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen after graduating from high school . After the first in 1953 and the second state examination in 1957, he joined the Foreign Service and, after completing his training as an attaché, from 1958 to 1963 initially worked as an employee of the embassy in the Philippines .

He then worked at the embassy in the United States and then from 1967 to 1970 at the Foreign Office in Bonn , before becoming head of the political department of the permanent mission to NATO in Brussels between 1970 and 1974 . From 1974 to 1978 he was head of the Foreign and Security Policy Department in the Federal Chancellery . He subsequently represented Germany at the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE).

Most recently, Detlev Graf zu Rantzau was Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York City from December 1990 until his retirement in 1995. The last time there was a German representative on the United Nations Security Council since January 1995 .

After leaving the diplomatic service, he later became the Foreign Office's representative for the Cyprus conflict and held this post until he was replaced by Peter Wittig in February 2000. In December 2009 he was elected to the Presidium of the German Society for the United Nations .
