German Peace Medal

The German Peace Medal was the highest award of the Peace Council of the GDR (DFR) of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), which was donated in two stages, silver and gold , in 1954 .

Appearance and wearing style

The silver, later silver-plated or gold-plated medal with a diameter of 35 mm shows on its obverse the portrait of Otto Hahn , seen from the left, and the inscription: FOR MERIT (above) FOR PEACE (below) The circle is completed by two Laurel branches on the left and right of the head on the edge of the medal. The reverse of the medal, on the other hand, shows a flying dove of peace with the inscription below: PEACE COUNCIL . The symbol of peace is surrounded by the inscription: THE GERMAN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC , which makes up three quarters of the circumference. The lower quarter is filled with two modern laurel branches. The medal was worn on the upper left side of the chest on a blue ribbon, in the middle of which a dove of peace in the color of the respective awarded level was placed.
