Dieter Eberle (born May 19, 1927 in Freiburg , Schweidnitz district , † April 1, 1994 in Berlin ) was a German journalist in the German Democratic Republic (GDR). He was editor-in-chief of the party newspapers Die Union and Neue Zeit of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) in the GDR.

Life

Eberle, son of a dentist , graduated from high school in 1944 and became a member of the National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP) in the same year . In 1945 he was drafted into the German Wehrmacht and fought as a simple soldier in World War II until the end of the war .

After the end of the war, Eberle settled in the Soviet-occupied zone of Germany and became a member of the CDU in 1946. From 1947 to 1950 he studied German and history at the Universities of Rostock and Leipzig . In 1951 he was with the work "The journalistic situation in the Sturm und Drang of Klopstock German Republic of Letters " doctorate .

Eberle was an editorial assistant from 1951 to 1952 and then until 1960 head of the Leipzig district editorial office of the CDU newspaper Die Union . In 1960 he switched to the Neue Zeit newspaper , the central organ of the GDR CDU, and was head of the party politics department there until 1962. He then worked for two years as the editorial secretary. From 1964 to 1974 he worked as deputy editor-in-chief and head of the New Time Service.

From 1974 to 1977 Eberle was editor-in-chief of the Märkische Union and at the same time the newspaper DIE UNION in Dresden and was then, as successor to Johannes Zillig (* 1934; † 2007), editor-in-chief of Neue Zeit . In October 1977 he became a member of the secretariat of the main board of the GDR CDU for the first time. In addition to his work as editor-in-chief, Eberle had been a member of the central board since 1977 and of the presidium of the Association of Journalists of the GDR since 1982 .

In November 1989 he announced his resignation as editor-in-chief of Neue Zeit and as a member of the secretariat of the CDU main board "for health reasons" . Under the impression of the Berlin mass demonstration on November 4, 1989 , he left the editorial office of Neue Zeit a day later . Shortly thereafter, he was on sick leave and remained out of service until his official retirement in 1990. His previous deputy and head of the service, Hans-Joachim Koppe , was initially named "acting editor-in-chief" until he was elected to this position by the staff of the Neue Zeit .

After his death in 1994, Die Neue Zeit wrote an obituary about his resignation as editor-in-chief:

“When Dieter Eberle, under the impression of the Berlin mass demonstration on November 4, 1989, broke the editorial office a day later and left forever because he did not want to be a scapegoat or a turning neck, this was at the same time the bitterest, the most liberating and the most consistent decision in his life.
