Joseph Freusberg (bishop, 1881)
Joseph Freusberg (born October 18, 1881 in Olpe , † April 10, 1964 in Erfurt ) was provost and auxiliary bishop in Fulda , based in Erfurt.
Life
Freusberg was the son of the father of the same name Joseph Freusberg and his wife Helen, a daughter of the center politician Carl Herold .
After graduating from high school, Freusberg studied philosophy and Catholic theology in Paderborn and Freiburg im Breisgau . On April 6, 1906, Freusberg was ordained a priest in Paderborn . For a short time he headed a boys' convention in Gelsenkirchen , then he studied canon law in Rome . After receiving his doctorate in 1909, he was initially vicar in Bielefeld .
In 1916 Freusberg took over the parish of St. Severi in Erfurt as pastor . In 1923 he was appointed provost of the cathedral parish in Erfurt and head of the clerical court there.
The Erfurt Cathedral in the aerial warfare of the Second World War was a great challenge for the cathedral provost. Freusberg took great care to ensure the best possible protection for cultural assets on and in the cathedral. The reconstruction of the war-damaged church building after 1945 - together with the cathedral architect Rudolf Stein - was largely due to him.
In 1945 Freusberg was a member of the advisory state assembly for Thuringia .
Since it became more and more difficult for the Bishop of Fulda to exercise official duties in the Thuringian part of his diocese after the Second World War , he appointed Freusberg as vicar general of the diocese of Fulda in 1946, based in Erfurt. On April 12, 1953, Pope Pius XII appointed Joseph Freusberg as titular bishop of Hadrianopolis in Epiro - an old bishopric 30 km east of Phoinike - and auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Fulda, based in Erfurt. He received his episcopal consecration from the Fulda diocesan bishop Johann Baptist Dietz on June 11, 1953. Co- consecrators were the Fulda auxiliary bishop Adolf Bolte and the bishop of Berlin , Wilhelm Weskamm . Freusberg played a key role in founding the philosophy and theological studies in Erfurt and ordained the later cardinals Georg Sterzinsky and Joachim Meisner as priests. Pope John XXIII awarded him the honorary title of Papal Assistant to the Throne in 1961 . In 1962, Hugo Aufderbeck succeeded him as auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Fulda, based in Erfurt.
Joseph Freusberg is buried in the cloister of Erfurt's St. Mary's Cathedral .
