Devolved is an Australian technical death metal band from Gold Coast that was formed in 1998. The band has been based in Los Angeles since 2005 .

history

The band was formed in 1998 by drummer John Sankey. He wrote the first songs together with the local guitarist Brett Noordin. Shortly afterwards, bassist and singer Joel Graham and guitarist Mark Walpole joined the cast. The following year the band recorded the demo Truth . In addition, the group held their first appearances. Since a concertgoer suffered an epileptic seizure from the strobe lights used in the stage show , the band was forced to put a warning notice on all promotional material and on all publications. In 2000, the group hit the studio to record their debut album Technologies . Before the recordings, Nik Carpenter joined the band as a singer. The album was released in 2001. After that, bassist Joel Graham left the line-up and was replaced first by Leighton Kearns and then by Wayde Dunn. To promote the album, the group held various tours and played with Strapping Young Lad and Machine Head , among others . Then the group went back to the studio to record the EP Automation 001 , which consisted of two new songs as well as live songs and interactive bonus material. After its release in 2002, it performed in the UK and other parts of Europe , with Devolved playing with bands like Opeth , Arch Enemy and Candlemass . Due to homesickness, singer Nik Carpenter flew back to Australia during the tour without notifying the group beforehand, which meant that the band was missing a singer for the last few appearances. For this, the guitarist Brett Noordin also took over the vocals. After returning to Australia, the band played with Fear Factory and toured Australia with the Japanese band Suns Owl. At the Fear Factory performances Sankey met their guitarist Dino Cazares . They both became friends quickly, after which they decided to fly to the US and work on a new project called Divine Heresy .

Sankey spent much of 2003 in Los Angeles before returning to Australia and collaborating with Noordin on new material. In addition, the band reached a contract for distribution with Sony Records . Nik Carpenter came back to the band for a short time to record the new album. Guitarist Jason Lacey replaced Mark Walpole, while Patrick Brown came on, who was responsible for interspersing samples . The album Calculated was released in Australia in 2004. The release was followed by appearances across Australia. In 2005 the album Roadrunner United was released , an all-star album that celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Roadrunner Records label , which included the song No Mas Control , which was written by Sankey and Dino Cazares. The group also decided to move its headquarters to the USA. As a result, all members except Sankey and Noordin left the band. Leighton Kearns then returned to the band as bassist while Brett Carpio played guitar. This was followed by appearances in various clubs in southern California, while the line-up around Sankey and Noordin changed again several times before permanent members were found with singer Kyle Zemanek, bassist Hal Berkstresser and sampler Tony Sabatino. Sankey continued to work on Divine Heresy and also played as a session and live drummer for Prong , All That Remains and Daughters of Mara . Devolved then signed a contract with Unique Leader Records , which Calculated was re-released on January 19, 2010, with the vocal tracks being re-sung by new singer Kyle Zemanek. The sound carrier was remixed by Neil Kernon and remastered by Alan Douches . In addition, the band held gigs in many parts of the United States. After returning to Los Angeles, Sankey and Cazares wrote new songs for Fear Factory. Devolved then wrote new material, this time with Sankey and Noordin as well as Zemanek and Berkstresser involved in the writing process.

The album was released in 2011 under the name Oblivion on Unique Leader Records. After that, Sankey decided to take a break from the band. Brett Noordin decided to move back to Australia while Sankey was working on a new thrash metal project called Throne of Ashes. He also wrote the new Fear Factory album The Industrialist with Cazares . After that Sankey decided to continue Devolved without the other members and started writing material for a new album on his own. After recording vocals and drums, he contacted Florida guitarist Mark Hawkins , who had previously performed a solo on Oblivion . Hawkins recorded the remaining guitar and bass tracks. Tony Campos ( Soulfly , Prong , Ministry , Asesino , Static-X ) and Francesco Artusato ( All Shall Perish ) could also be heard as guest musicians . Then came the Throne of Ashes singer Mark Haggblad, who made the last vocal recordings. The album was released in late 2012 on Unique Leader Records under the name Reprisal . In March 2013, Sankey announced the founding of the supergroup Devil You Know .

style

According to Brian Fischer-Giffin in his book Encyclopedia of Australian Heavy Metal, the band play technical death metal, comparable to the early works of Fear Factory and Meshuggah . On Technologies start-stop are staccato - riffing enriched by electronic influences and a sophisticated drumming listen. According to Martin Wickler from Metal Hammer , the music on Technologies can mainly be assigned to Death Metal, although light Industrial Metal , mainly caused by the samples, can also be heard. The songs are usually very fast, which is mainly caused by a frequent double bass . Wickler found the singing monotonous.
