The Diakonie Stetten , formerly the Stetten Institution , is an institution of the Diakonie of the Protestant churches based in the village of Stetten im Remstal , part of the municipality of Kernen im Remstal in the Rems-Murr district near Stuttgart.

history

The Diakonie Stetten emerged from the sanatorium and nursing home for mentally ill children founded with three handicapped children by the Tübingen doctor Georg Friedrich Müller in Riet near Vaihingen / Enz in 1849 . In 1851 the company moved to Winterbach for reasons of space . After the space there became too scarce due to the increasing number of residents, Müller's son-in-law Johannes Landenberger brokered the purchase of the vacant Stetten Castle from the Württemberg royal family in 1863 . In 1864 the sanatorium and nursing home opened for epileptics and the feeble-minded in Stetten Castle.

The Stetten institution expanded more and more, built new buildings and also bought land in neighboring Rommelshausen . The institute's own school operations already employed ten teachers in 1864. Since in 1875 250 foster children were cared for, a separate cemetery had to be created. In 1892 the people looked after worked in workshops, bakery, bookbinding, shoemaking, wood turning, brush binding and a farm. In the same year, Hermann Hesse attended school for mentally ill people for three months due to a "mood disorder" . Today's Theodor Dierlamm School for severely disabled children ( private school for the mentally handicapped and partly also physically handicapped at the Diakonie Stetten eV home ), which also includes a school kindergarten , is named after the principal of the school from 1951 to 1980, Theodor Dierlamm (1912 –2004), named.

From 1930 to 1965 the sanatorium was headed by Ludwig Schlaich .

time of the nationalsocialism

"Stone of Remembrance"

In 1940 328 residents of the institution were systematically killed as part of the euthanasia movement based on Nazi racial hygiene ; the majority in the Nazi killing center Grafeneck and 11 residents in the Nazi killing center Hadamar . Since 1999 a memorial designed by the sculptor Markus Wolf has been commemorating these victims of the Nazi regime on the grounds of the Diakonie Stetten.

post war period

In 1971 the remstal workshops were founded.

From July 2005 to February 2006, the then chairman of the board, Klaus-Dieter Kottnik, was also the director of the Evangelical Diakoniewerk Schwäbisch Hall . Extensive cooperation between the two institutions was sought, but could not be implemented. The current chairman of the board of the Diakonie Stetten eV is the pastor Rainer Hinzen since October 2008 . The chairman of the administrative board is the former city dean of the evangelical church district of Stuttgart Hans-Peter Ehrlich.

The Diakonie Stetten has been orienting itself in the field of handicapped assistance since 1994 on the curative educational thought model of the GBM procedure ( design of care for people with disabilities ) and since 2007 increasingly has been using the assistance model of the Dutchman Willem Kleine-Schaars ( WKS ) a.

In the course of its restructuring efforts towards a decentralized facility, Diakonie Stetten moved into a new residential complex in the Esslingen district with 36 in 2012 , and three further decentralized residential units in the Rems-Murr district with 24 residential spaces each for people with intellectual disabilities in 2013 .

Work day

Since 2012 the Diakonie Stetten has been organizing a work day in which employees from different companies volunteer to carry out projects with the Diakonie residents that would otherwise not be possible. The aim of the day is to make inclusion tangible.

The concept enables visitors to Diakonie Stetten and its facilities to change perspective and overcome their fear of contact.
