Dialogue e. V. - Society for German-Turkish Dialogue is a non-profit German association that was founded in 2000 and is based in Duisburg . He is particularly committed to improving coexistence between Turks and Germans and promotes, among other things. a. the cross-cultural life in Germany. The association also acted as a book publisher from 2008 to 2013 and published German and Turkish-language books under the publisher's name Dialog Edition . The publisher has been operating independently under the name Verlag Dialog-Edition Istanbul- Duisburg since 2014 .

According to the statutes, the purpose is to promote cultural, social and economic relations between Germany and Turkey and intercultural life in Germany, as well as corresponding cultural, scientific and social activities.

In detail, the association has set itself the following goals:

  • Improvement of the coexistence between Turks and Germans.
  • Promotion of intercultural dialogue in a democratic and tolerant sense.
  • Involvement of the second and third generation of Turkish citizens in Germany.
  • Influence on the cultural, scientific and economic activities between Germans and Turks for closer ties between the two countries.
  • Openness to uncomfortable topics and controversial discussions.
  • Creation of problem solutions.

Development and activities

The association was founded in April 2000 in Duisburg. The co-founders include a. the librarian and intercultural activist Tayfun Demir and the journalist, radio presenter and writer Aslı Sevindim . The association is one of the initiators of the Alte Feuerwache culture and district center in Duisburg- Hochfeld and, after the renovation and renovation of the historic building and the completion of an extension in 2007, is based there as a co-tenant alongside other cultural associations. The association also uses the event rooms and other space of the cultural center, if necessary, for its own events.

Tayfun Demir has been chairman of the association since it was founded.

The association leads u. a. intercultural events, such as cultural festivals, concerts, art and literature exhibitions, book readings, workshops and seminars. He is partly active in the entire Ruhr area as well as in all of North Rhine-Westphalia and Turkey. He also participates in major intercultural events and forums, etc., as well as in municipal educational offers. The association also organizes study trips to Turkey. The association is a member of the sponsoring association of the Alte Feuerwache culture and district center .

Projects

  • 2001: Lingua Franca , literary encounters between authors from different countries of origin who write in German. The project team included u. a. the journalist Aslı Sevindim.
  • Since 2005: Participation as one of two project partners in the North Rhine-Westphalian project Baglama for everyone! an intercultural course on the Anatolian long-necked lute bağlama , which is considered to be the “most popular Turkish stringed instrument”. The project is operated and funded by the NRW KULTURsekretariat , it began in the 2005/2006 school year. A total of 17 urban music schools in the major cities in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) are involved. According to the NRW KULTURsekretariat (NRW KULTURsekretariat), this state-wide measure is intended to make a “significant musical and cultural contribution to the integration of the largest ethnic group in NRW”.
  • 2005: FrauenWelten - international caricatures , presentation of the caricature exhibition of the Essen cultural association Exile Kulturkoordination e. V. in Istanbul .
  • 2005: Melez Festival , German-Turkish art and culture festival in the Jahrhunderthalle in Bochum (in cooperation with the cultural center Ringlokschuppen Mülheim ).
  • Literature from Germany's niches , an exhibition and internet project about Turkish and Turkish-German literature that was realized in two parts:
    • Part I: German-Turkish Literature (exhibition from November 2007)
    • Part II: Turkish Literature in German Translations (exhibition from September 2008)

As a contribution to intercultural dialogue, the association published a series of German and partly Turkish-language books under the publishing label Dialog Edition ( ISBN - publisher number : 3-9812594). By 2013 two non-fiction books and four works of fiction had been published, including a novel by the Turkish author Fakir Baykurt, who died in 1999, and two volumes of poetry by Lütfiye Güzel , a German with a Turkish migration background , which was first published in German .

The Dialog Edition program attracted attention, some of the books were formulated or cited several times and the works of fiction also received several reviews . The books published by Dialog Edition until 2013 belong to the holdings of numerous academic and general libraries in Germany and abroad. The two bibliographical non-fiction books published by Tayfun Demir on Turkish literature in German and Turkish-German literature, both of which appeared in the Dialog Edition in 2008, were included in the international exhibition Books on Turkey at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2008. Since 2014 the publisher has been working under the name Verlag Dialog-Edition Istanbul-Duisburg independently of the Dialog eV association
