Diane Guerrero (born July 21, 1986 in New Jersey ) is an American actress . She was best known for her roles as Maritza Ramos in the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black and as Lina in Jane the Virgin . Her role in Orange Is the New Black has won three Screen Actors Guild Awards for Best Acting Company in a Television Series - Comedy .

Life

Guerrero was born in New Jersey to Colombian parents and grew up in Boston , Massachusetts . As the only family member holding United States citizenship , she remained in the United States while her parents and older brother were expelled back to Colombia when she was 14 years old. Guerrero grew up in the Jamaica Plain and Roxbury neighborhoods of Boston after being taken in by other Colombian families. She attended the music department of the Boston Arts Academy. During her school days she sang in a jazz group. At the age of 24, she decided to pursue a career in acting. In 2011 she moved to New York City and studied acting at Susan Batson Studios, where she met her manager Josh Taylor. She has appeared as an actress since 2011 and has since appeared in more than 15 television and film productions.
