Die Brücke is a German war drama from 2008 produced by ProSieben for television . Directed by Wolfgang Panzer , the screenplay was written by Wolfgang Kirchner based on the autobiographical novel of the same name by Manfred Gregor , published in 1958 , which was made into a film in 1959 with Die Brücke .
action
The action takes place in April 1945, at the end of World War II . The 16-year-old schoolboy Walter Forst was drafted into the Wehrmacht along with six classmates . Walter, the son of a NSDAP functionary , has an affair with the teacher Elfie Bauer, who unsuccessfully tries to dissuade him and his classmates from the mission ordered.
The young soldiers are assigned by a general to defend a bridge against the advancing American troops . They are willing to hold the bridge to the end, but are also shocked by the brutality of the war that claims its victims. The boys succeed in forcing the American armored spearhead to withdraw temporarily. In the all-day fighting, all but Albert Mutz and Walter Forst die. Forst is finally shot by the German demolition squad that wants to destroy the bridge despite the resistance of the students.
