action

The film is set in China in 1949 after the Sino-Japanese War . Rebels are rebelling against the government troops under Chiang Kai-shek , the country is torn and far from peace and stability. The rebels intend to blow up a dam on the Yellow River . Through a traitor, the plan ends up in the hands of the stumbled, drunk US reporter John Bell. He senses his chance for a big story and tries to get to the scene in time by train.

In the overcrowded refugee train, he meets the doctor Dorothy Simmons. On the way, the passengers are forced to seek refuge in a pagoda . However, the rebels Wang and Anak are on the reporter's track in order to get rid of those who knew it. An assassination attempt in the pagoda fails. Wang reveals himself to be the mastermind behind the planned demolition and offers him safe escort to the dam. At the same time, he threatens to kill Dorothy if Bell betrays him.

To protect Dorothy, he pretends to do so. When the pagoda is attacked a little later, Bell confesses his love for the doctor. Because of her influence, Bell decided to become a better person. With a vehicle he sets off for the dam - this time not to take sensational photos, but to thwart the devastating plan. Fear of death, he engages Wang in a fight, but can no longer prevent the impending catastrophe.
