The first season of the German emergency and rescue series Die Rettungsflieger celebrated its premiere on January 27, 1998 on the ZDF broadcaster . The finale was broadcast on March 3, 1998.

The six episodes of the first season were broadcast for the first time on Tuesday evening on the 7:25 pm slot and have been repeated regularly in the afternoon program of ZDF and in the afternoon and evening programs of ZDFneo since the television series was discontinued in 2007 .

The rescue pilot crew around pilot Alexander Karuhn, on-board mechanic Max Westphal, emergency doctor Dr. Maren Maibach and paramedic Thomas Asmus are called to a serious accident. While rescuing the injured, the on-board mechanic discovers a second victim shortly before an injured person is transported away, but any help comes too late for him. Shortly before the young man succumbs to his injuries, the on-board mechanic has to promise to arrange for the man's organ donation, but later his father takes a stand and the sergeant major has to persuade him. A little later the team goes to the port of Hamburg for the next assignment. There, an overweight crane operator has to be rescued using a rescue winch. A little later, the rescue pilots are called to a dog bite, which should bring them a headline.

Meanwhile, the boy's life is in danger and the team has to join forces to get the helicopter ready to fly again because the ambulance is stuck in traffic. In the evening, paramedic Thomas Asmus has to help his son Joschi, who is harassed by a gang, and is himself in danger, but Maren Maibach and Alexander Karuhn rush to his aid. When the next day a man shoots his ex-wife with a gun and kidnaps their son, the captain is asked and has to mediate.

But when he arrives at the rescue center, the shock follows: Lieutenant Colonel Gerald Schröder came by to give the pilot his release from duty and the admission to a Bundeswehr hospital because his blood values ​​are apparently not in order. When the pilot visited emergency doctor Dr. Maren Maibach receives the two to look for reasons for the blood values ​​and mix up the station.
