The first season of the German emergency and rescue series Die Rettungsflieger celebrated its premiere on January 27, 1998 on the ZDF broadcaster . The finale was broadcast on March 3, 1998.
The six episodes of the first season were broadcast for the first time on Tuesday evening on the 7:25 pm slot and have been repeated regularly in the afternoon program of ZDF and in the afternoon and evening programs of ZDFneo since the television series was discontinued in 2007 .

| The rescue pilot crew around pilot Alexander Karuhn, on-board mechanic Max Westphal, emergency doctor Dr. Maren Maibach and paramedic Thomas Asmus are called to a serious accident. While rescuing the injured, the on-board mechanic discovers a second victim shortly before an injured person is transported away, but any help comes too late for him. Shortly before the young man succumbs to his injuries, the on-board mechanic has to promise to arrange for the man's organ donation, but later his father takes a stand and the sergeant major has to persuade him. A little later the team goes to the port of Hamburg for the next assignment. There, an overweight crane operator has to be rescued using a rescue winch. A little later, the rescue pilots are called to a dog bite, which should bring them a headline.

| The rescue pilot team is transferred to the practice of the cosmetic surgeon Dr. Bernard Maibach called. For emergency doctor Dr. This mission is special for Maren Maibach because the cosmetic surgeon is her ex-husband and she actually wanted to forget him. When he appears at the rescue center a little later and wants to thank the emergency doctor, she is extremely impressed. The next day, two new missions await the team: An old woman has suffered a circulatory collapse and has to be flown to the clinic. The team is touched by the particularly loving treatment of her husband. But the next mission is much more dramatic: during a boat trip with his grandson, the grandfather gets his hands in the propeller and the ship's engine threatens to explode. However, shortly before the explosion, the rescue pilots manage to save their grandson and grandpa from the ship.

| A boy drank from a bottle filled with petroleum and burned his esophagus. The ambulance team is quickly on site and can arrange for the transport to be carried out, but during the flight to the clinic the helicopter is damaged by an illegally launched model aircraft and is initially unfit to fly. Meanwhile, the boy's life is in danger and the team has to join forces to get the helicopter ready to fly again because the ambulance is stuck in traffic. In the evening, paramedic Thomas Asmus has to help his son Joschi, who is harassed by a gang, and is himself in danger, but Maren Maibach and Alexander Karuhn rush to his aid. When the next day a man shoots his ex-wife with a gun and kidnaps their son, the captain is asked and has to mediate.

| Paramedic Thomas Asmus is on vacation. His representation takes over from Oberbootsmann Leo Sidowski. This is anything but a team player and gets involved with emergency doctor Dr. Maren Maibach violently against each other. But the next mission creates some distraction and demands the full concentration of pilot Alexander Karuhn. The pilot of a twin-engine Cessna collapsed with hypoglycaemia and the mother now has to land the plane, but she has no experience of flying. The captain manages to support the woman with the landing via radio messages. But when he arrives at the rescue center, the shock follows: Lieutenant Colonel Gerald Schröder came by to give the pilot his release from duty and the admission to a Bundeswehr hospital because his blood values are apparently not in order. When the pilot visited emergency doctor Dr. Maren Maibach receives the two to look for reasons for the blood values and mix up the station.

| After a large-scale operation in the kindergarten, during which the rescue pilots had to treat children with symptoms of poisoning, the atmosphere in the team was frosty, because the captain Leo Sidowski misjudged the kindergarten teacher and emergency doctor Dr. Maren Maibach upset. Just when a discussion is about to take place, the rescuers are called to the next mission: In prison, a prisoner has apparently suffered a heart attack and has to be flown to a hospital. Shortly before take-off, the security escorts arrive and climb into the helicopter, but the situation turns when the helicopter suddenly turns to Dr. Maren Maibach holds a gun to his head and forces Alexander Karuhn to land. The prisoner can be freed by his criminal friends. The result is a major police operation in which the police helicopter is shot down and the Bundeswehr team has to provide administrative assistance.

| Emergency doctor Dr. It is Maren Maibach's birthday, but an operation in the engine compartment of a cargo ship, in which two crew members are injured by boiling fuel, spoils her party mood. When the team is called for the next mission, they are faced with a problem: A pregnant woman is in labor on the top floor of a high-rise building, but the elevator is broken and the rescue pilots have to land on the roof. Dr. Maren Maibach succeeds in providing obstetrics. When the mother and child have arrived at the clinic in good health, the rescue pilots celebrate the birthday of their emergency doctor.

The DVD with the episodes from the first season and the pilot film Four Friends in Action was released on October 5, 2007.
A DVD box with all eleven squadrons of the rescue pilots and the pilot was released on August 24, 2012.
