The sixth season of the German emergency and rescue series Die Rettungsflieger celebrated its premiere on April 3, 2002 on the ZDF broadcaster . The finale was broadcast on June 5, 2002.

The ten episodes of the sixth season were first broadcast on the Wednesday evening before the 7:25 pm slot and have been repeated regularly in the afternoon program of ZDF and in the afternoon and evening programs of ZDFneo since the television series was discontinued in 2007 .

While Jan Wollcke is annoyed about the plans of his still-wife who wants to take their little son on a model trip around the world, Major Alexander Karuhn receives terrible news from the mother of his son Benny that he had a serious accident in Australia a sports pilot. The major immediately tries to get a vacation and to travel to Australia with his mother, but this attempt turns out to be more difficult than expected, because there is no free pilot available in the squadron and so Alexander Karuhn has to continue to serve. When Benny's mother is about to take a taxi to the airport, a replacement for the SAR 71 pilot comes after all: Captain Jens Blank. But his rough manner turns out to be less suitable for a team and clashes with on-board technician Jan Wollcke. Meanwhile, the next mission leads the crew to an accident with a car: A young son had played in his mother's car and trapped her in the process, but the emergency doctor who was already on site is completely overwhelmed and Dr. Ilona Müller becomes very clear to her colleague. In the evening, the emergency doctor tries to approach Captain Blank.

When the crew returns to the rescue center, Jan Wollcke's still-wife Iris is waiting there and the two talk about their current situation. Meanwhile, Jens Blank integrated better into the rescue pilot team.

Major Alexander Karuhn returns from Australia and resumes the position of pilot in the rescue helicopter. Captain Blank is disappointed, because he would have liked to stay with the team and therefore emergency doctor Dr. Ilona Müller, with whom he fell in love, got closer. But when the two meet for a romantic dinner, Ilona Müller confesses to the pilot the background to their approaching behavior. The captain is deeply injured and leaves the restaurant on the spot. When the rescue pilots are called to crash a Cessna on the site of a chemical plant the next day, it is pure chaos. The Cessna crew can no longer be helped, but when Dr. Ilona Müller is taking care of an injured firefighter, a large part of the crashed Cessna falls on the emergency doctor and seriously injures her. The whole team is shocked and Captain Blank, who has just arrived at the scene of the accident with the crew of another rescue helicopter, rushes to help, but Dr. Ilona Müller was so badly injured that her crew around pilot Alexander Karuhn, on-board technician Jan Wollcke and paramedic Thomas Asmus together with the emergency doctor of the Diepholz flight squadron, Dr. Thomas Samek, fly to the hospital and hope.

Just as the pilot Alexander Karuhn and on-board technician Jan Wollcke arrive at the rescue center to start work, they find a complete stranger in the SAR 71 rescue helicopter. While the major immediately calls for security duty, the sergeant major only has eyes for the beautiful woman. The two crew members are completely surprised when they discover that chief boatman Thomas Asmus recognizes the woman and gives them Dr. Sabine Petersen introduces: She is the new emergency doctor for SAR 71. This new appointment particularly annoys pilot Alexander Karuhn, who had hoped that medical officer Dr. Ilona Müller would return soon. He is very critical of the newcomer, especially since she, much younger than himself, is also a senior staff doctor. Meanwhile, the missions take the crew to a restaurant where a kitchen boy has suffered food poisoning and a car accident involving a young boy. But Alexander Karuhn can't get used to the nature of his new emergency doctor and when she raves about a pilot from Ulm, her old office at SAR 75 , the major's collar bursts and he confronts her. When the first mission the following day reveals a familiar face from the previous day, the team is surprised.

It's extremely hot in Hamburg. The rescue pilots are called to countless missions: So they are called to a vegetable shop where a woman has collapsed, Dr. Sabine Petersen fears that it could be her mother because she owns the shop. However, the patient is not her mother, but a young woman: the rescue pilots have to stabilize the dehydrated woman's circulation and go looking for her car, in which her baby is located, which is exposed to the heat. When Thomas Asmus, Alexander Karuhn and Dr. Sabine Petersen meet in the swimming pool after work is a big surprise, but while Karuhn, who is out with Jan Wollcke's son Richie, meets a woman, he discovers a lifeless body in a swimming pool and tries to see the boy's life together with his colleagues save what ultimately succeeds. A chimney sweep has an accident at work and has to be rescued by the rescue pilot team using a winch . The crew also has to rescue a young man who tried to steal gasoline from a car's tank through a hose and swallowed gasoline in the process. Dr. Sabine Petersen is familiar with the tactic, because petrol was recently stolen from her too. A little later, the team is called to an accident: A young couple has been hit by a truck with a motorcycle: The young woman is immediately dead and Dr. Sabine Petersen is devastated. The emergency doctor collapses in fear and then corrects her colleague from a trauma from her puberty, which led her to her decision to become an emergency doctor. The on-board technician Jan Wollcke, who has just bought a motorcycle, promises his colleagues to sell the motorcycle again. Meanwhile, pilot Alexander Karuhn, who met a woman - Astrid Shariatzadeh - with the help of Jan Wollcke's son Richie, has to resolve the provoked misunderstanding of Astrid in order to resolve "his son" Richie.

The rescue pilots are called to work on a construction site, but the situation turns out to be more difficult than expected, as the injured construction worker cannot be rescued by the fire brigade as the way to the accident site is impassable. The rescue pilots have to try to move the concrete block with the helicopter. The next mission will be dramatic: a jogger lies injured on a railway line and a museum train is rolling towards the scene of the accident. Since it is not possible to reach the driver via cell phone or radio, the rescue pilots have to prevent a disaster.

It is pilot Alexander Karuhn's birthday and the rescue helicopter crew surprises their pilot with a serenade and presents. But while the team is preparing the birthday party in the evening at the rescue center, an operation interrupts the organization. Pensioner Alice Hartmann finds the kitchen helper at a snack bar in her apartment. The pensioner suffers from angina pectoris and wants her dog to be taken in the rescue helicopter, but since this is not possible, she puts her in her travel bag without further ado, but this is noticed in the hospital. Dr. Sabine Petersen promises the woman to take the dog to the rescue center. But there Jule, the dog lady, stoops down Private Homann and leads to a search operation, which ultimately also Colonel Dr. Kettwig finds out. He is upset about the violation of the rules. When the next mission leads to the morning snack again, the rescuers from SAR 71 are amazed, not only that the location looks familiar to them, but also recognizes a well-known voice as on-board technician Jan Wollcke in the radio traffic with the flight control: Elke Kehding, the ex -Friend of Alexander Karuhn is back from Eurocontrol in Paris and seems to be working in Hamburg again. Pilot Alexander Karuhn tries to ignore her at first, but she becomes intrusive and finally shows up at his birthday party in the rescue center, which leads to tensions between her and Astrid Shariatzadeh, Karuhn's current partner.

The DVD with the sixth season episodes was released on April 24, 2009.

A DVD box with all eleven squadrons of the rescue pilots and the pilot film Four Friends in Action was released on August 24, 2012.
