The work and private life of the rescue pilot crew of the Hamburg rescue helicopter SAR 71 of the German Armed Forces is depicted . action

The rescue pilots are on their way to work on the Michel . There a little girl was hit by a car and seriously injured. While emergency physician Dr. Maren Maibach and rescue assistant Oberbootsmann Thomas Asmus take care of the medical care of the child, on-board technician Sergeant Max Westphal has to keep the onlookers away from the scene of the accident. The little girl can be flown to Eppendorf University Hospital , but the mother, who is also injured, is driven by the ambulance to St. Georg General Hospital (AK St. Georg). A contradiction for Maren Maibach. She advocates that mother and daughter are brought to the same hospital and therefore tries to speak to the mother's doctors after work to arrange for a transfer.

After the mission back at the rescue center, Thomas Asmus hands out a cake for the crew's anniversary, but pilot Captain Alexander Karuhn behaves strangely, to the astonishment of his colleagues, and leaves the group very quickly. A little later the other three crew members go shopping together, with Max Westphal falling in love with a young woman and inviting her on a date; Unsuspecting that the young woman is married.

The first mission the following day leads the rescue helicopter crew to a request for assistance from the Hamburg police : A young woman is missing. For the search, the police requested the assistance of the Bundeswehr helicopter. On the approach to the mission, however, the crew received the information that the wanted person had already been found by the police. The Bundeswehr rescue flight squadron can move away again and go to work. But while the others are enjoying their evening, Alexander Karuhn drives to his parents' house: his father, a general a. D. The Bundeswehr, which the pilot has not seen for several years, is in the end-stage lung cancer and is dying. Arriving at his parents' house, the captain meets his angry sister. Completely overwhelmed by the situation, he disappears again.

The next morning the pilot is still upset, but has to focus his full concentration on the next mission, because the rescue pilots are called to a person with poisoning. A large number of fire brigades and police are already waiting at the scene. However, the rescuers do not manage to resuscitate the man, which is particularly difficult for emergency doctor Maren Maibach. When she visits the little girl who was involved in the accident at the Michel in the evening and is able to help her mother at the bedside, she takes heart. While Max Westphal is looking for his great love, the emergency doctor decides to go dancing, but is stopped by her colleague Alexander Karuhn. He is getting worse and worse, as he is plagued by feelings of guilt towards his dying father. He asks Maren Maibach for advice.

When Lisa Heitmann, Max Westphal's lover, called the crew for an assignment in the neighborhood the next day, the on-board technician and Manfred Heitmann, the husband, meet, which leads to irritation. After work, Alexander Karuhn takes heart and drives back to his parents' house, where there is a reconciling discussion between father and son. Just as the pilot and his father get closer again, the father grabs his son's hand and dies.
