The Street of Evil is an American tragic comedy from 1974 . The film, enriched with elements of the thriller, is also known under the title Revolt of the Outcasts .
action
Mattie Spencer and her roommates Miss Emily Wilkins, Mr. and Mrs. Loomis, and Mr. Blakely watch their neighborhood fall victim to impending gentrification . The large high-rise Crawford Center is being built right next to their tenements , which is why Miss Pollack is relocating all tenants on behalf of Mr. Crawford. However, most of them resist leaving their homes, which is why arguments keep coming up. There is some hope again when a construction worker falls from the skyscraper and the construction work is suspended for a day due to grief. Some even hope that the impending eviction is now completely over, but Miss Pollack shows no mercy and lets the unruly tenants turn off the electricity and water. But the tenants know what to do.
Shortly afterwards, Mattie watches an elevator explode at the skyscraper and another fatality occurs, so that construction work is halted again for a day. Mr. Crawford suspects sabotage and is not only furious about it, but also determined to get his $ 50 million project to work faster, which is why he wants to accelerate the demolition of his apartment buildings. Therefore, this time Miss Pollack appears with the police when she is moving the remaining tenants to her new house. However, since she finds neither Miss Wilkins nor Mattie, she returns again later and is met by Miss. Wilkins stabbed. Mattie agrees to have both Pollack's car and the murder weapon disappear. But since she hasn't driven a car for 40 years, this is more bad than right. The body itself also disappears after Mattie retrieves her old roommates and a wheelchair from the new home.
Then they all hide in the basement, knowing that the demolition vehicles will soon appear to destroy their house. To prevent this, they lure Mr. Crawford into their house, where they set a trap and take him prisoner. They hope to blackmail the security of their home. But since he does not cooperate convincingly, they bring him tied up to his skyscraper, where they pour concrete over him. But that does not mean that the demolition is prevented, but rather the remorse. First, Mrs. Loomis wants to tell the police about the crime. But Mattie manages to stop her just in time by throwing a heavy object. Then Mattie believes that Mr. Blakely wants to betray her, which is why she kills him from behind. And there miss. Wilkins was there for Mattie's act, Mattie picks her as the next victim. Miss. Wilkins flees Mattie, overcomes her agoraphobia for the first time, and escapes the house. Mattie follows her to the Crawford Center , where she can only be stopped by the other roommates. Mattie recognizes the situation and now flees from the others until they have driven her away.
When the wrecking balls later hit the outbuilding, the rest of the residents know that their time has come, so they leave their home and blow it up. Only Miss Wilkins, Mr. Blakely and Mr. Loomis are left, who are now looking for a new home. After believing they have found one, local residents say that their house will also be cleared and demolished in a few months to build apartments for the rich. The three offer their help and Mattie returns in the end.
Reviews
“Ambivalent film that vacillates between social concerns, black comedy and horror; handcrafted above average. "
"With great attention to detail, this macabre American film [...] shows how the old people lure the builder and owner of the property into a trap at night, shackle them, create the building and set them alive in their own skyscraper."
background
