action

The budding artist Josefine leaves her hometown Munich in a rush after learning of her mother's death . Her goal is to find out more about her previously unknown father, who lives or is said to have lived there, in a small Bavarian village that her mother had left shortly before she was born. At the same time, Josefine seeks more distance from her boyfriend through the trip, who, contrary to his promises, has not yet separated from his wife.

Once in the village, she finds shelter in the half-ruined dairy of Willy Kamrad, an elderly gentleman who lives there alone. Everyday life in the small town, which is surrounded, among other things, by moor forests , is held in suspense when Josefine's arrival, however, by the sudden disappearance of 22-year-old Jessica. Three years earlier, a young woman named Susanne had disappeared without a trace.

During her stay, Josefine approaches the long-established and strange-looking Kamrad, because she hopes to get information about her father through him. In addition to photographs, Kamrad can gradually find documents that reveal the identity of her father, who died in an accident many years ago. Her research in the village first leads her to the run-down farm of Angelika, which Josefine does not like to see on her property at first and drives her away. In the village shop, where Josefine always gets news about the search for the missing young woman from the saleswoman, there are strange encounters with Angelika. It soon turns out that Angelika is the mother of Susanne, who disappeared three years ago, and that her husband was also Josefine's father. At that time he had a relationship with Josefine's mother. Because of her pregnancy, Josefine's mother was fired from the company where she had worked with Angelika.

Josefine feels increasingly uncomfortable near Kamrad, who is behaving more and more strangely. His behavior raises the suspicion in the young woman that Kamrad had something to do with the disappearance of 22-year-old Jessica. Josefine then turns to the local police , but they do not believe her in relation to Kamrad's perpetration. When the budding artist is about to leave the police station, some officers come along with the missing Jessica. The police were able to track her down after she suddenly disappeared ("ran away") with her new boyfriend.

When Josefine comes back to the dairy, her friend Simon first visits her. Simon confesses to her that he cannot separate from his wife because she has unexpectedly become pregnant. The young woman then ended the relationship. After Simon has left the place, Josefine accidentally falls in the presence of Kamrad and is unconscious for some time. Meanwhile, Kamrad locks the artist in a locked but comfortably furnished cellar. When she comes to, she discovers, among other things, long hair in a hairbrush and personal belongings from Susanne, her half-sister, who disappeared three years ago. With this she is convinced of the culprit of Kamrad. After she comes to the conclusion that it is not so easy to escape from the locked cellar, Josefine pretends to be in harmony with Kamrad at dinner and asks him to lie down on the bed for a portrait. When Kamrad closes his eyes, the young woman secretly takes the key from his jacket pocket and lights the bed and some curtains with a candle. Taking advantage of the situation, she manages to free herself from the cellar, but Kamrad follows her into the moor forest, into which she runs in her distress. After a chase and a scuffle, Kamrad steps into a moorland and completely sinks into it. While he is sinking in, Angelika suddenly appears and helps Josefine to find her way back out of the moor. Provided with fresh clothes, she takes them back to Munich by bus the next day. On departure, Angelika hands her a few letters from her murdered half-sister Susanne, who wrote them to Josefine but did not send them. In it she reports about their common father, whom she had lost herself when she was nine years old.

criticism

"Tired of atmospheric density, but not particularly exciting (TV) crime film."

“Thanks to the good actors, director Hans Horn succeeded in creating an exciting and atmospherically dense thriller, which always knows how to come up with surprising twists. Although [...] Maria Simon [...] sometimes seems a little naive in the role of the budding artist, the multifaceted play of Franz Xaver Kroetz [...] compensates for that. He gives the strange neighbors with such passion that the viewer can get fear and anxiety. The pictures by cameraman Torsten Breuer are also great [...]. "

“Accidentally surreal: director Hans Horn leaves almost everything to chance in his film“ Die Tote im Moorwald ”. So a village farce takes its approximate course. "
