action

Texas, shortly after the civil war: the old patriarch Temple Cordeen and his numerous sons continue to fight on his vast estate. The representatives of the north are in a difficult position; a journalist is lynched. The return of a son from the Civil War, Lon, creates a family crisis, not least with sister Alice, who is secretly engaged to Charlie Garvey. Lon does not prevent their relationship as he should, but supports them. After numerous arguments, the three of them leave the area and are successful as ranchers. When they return to Texas, Temple doesn't shy away from violence either. In the end, Lon leaves the house of his ancestors, in which the children of Temples founded new, intact families and in which Temple lives in mental derangement.

criticism

The lexicon of international films praised the film: “A psychologically deepened Western of sometimes depressing severity.” Spaghetti Western expert Christian Keßler praised “an eminently good screenplay” and the “great” actor Joseph Cotten. The Italian critics, on the other hand, reprimand the rhythm of the story and describe the direction and performance as professional.
