occupation

The four hands is a psychological thriller by the German director Oliver Kienle . The world premiere was on June 25, 2017 at the Munich Film Festival , and the film was released in German cinemas on November 30, 2017. The international title used at festivals is Four Hands .

action

Jessica and her younger sister Sophie watched their parents being killed by burglars as children. Jessica swore to Sophie at the time that she would always take care of her. For the adult Jessica, this promise has become an obsession and leads to paranoia and delusions.

The younger sister, on the other hand, wants to leave the past behind and devote herself entirely to playing the piano. When the sisters learn that the perpetrators are due to be released after twenty years, the resulting nervousness leads to an argument and Jessica is killed in a car accident. The memory of the late Jessica brings Sophie to the brink of schizophrenia. Obsessed with the ghost of her dead sister, Sophie sets out to avenge her parents' deaths.

reception

The German Film and Media Assessment (FBW) awarded the title particularly valuable . The jury's reasoning stated that “the extremely exciting, psychological story” was captivating until the very end. The two main characters would be "presented in a wonderful way in their fundamental differences, so that both looked like two sides of one [...] coin". The figure of the doctor creates the balance and is the leading figure with which the audience walked "through the complex and artfully interwoven story". The camera work is ingenious, the rhythmic montage creates a "suction-like and breathless tension" and helps "with the visual puzzle" of the story.

Reviews

Michael Ranze from the Catholic Film Service believes that the film is artfully constructed and “captivates with its psychologically gripping plot.” He uses well-known myths and the finale is surprising. Towards the end, "the dramaturgical screw is turned a bit."
