The Thieving Magpie ( Burglar ) is an American comedy film directed by Hugh Wilson from 1987. The plot is based on the novel "The Burglar in The Closet" by Lawrence Block from 1978.

Bernice Rhodenbarr is a professional thief who runs a bookstore as cover. She is friends with Carl Hefler, who trains dogs.

A policeman has evidence on Rhodenbarr and demands $ 20,000. This forces her to have another break-in, during which she discovers a body.

The corrupt policeman's colleagues, Todras and Nyswander, demand that Rhodenbarr be extradited to the police as a murder suspect. This escapes on a stolen police motorcycle. After a chase through the streets of San Francisco , she escapes.

Rhodenbarr finds out that the killer is a lawyer who was in love and jealous of the man who was killed. She arranges a meeting with the killer. The policeman secretly records the conversation. The lawyer flees; Rhodenbarr, the policeman and Hefler are chasing him. Rhodenbarr overpowered the man in a duel.
