Green Hell is a 1939 American adventure film directed by James Whale and starring Douglas Fairbanks . The film is based on a story by screenwriter Frances Marion .

action

Keith Brandon leads an expedition into the South American jungle. The aim of the expedition is to raise a treasure that is said to be buried under an ancient Inca city . The expedition includes Hal Scott, David Richardson, Dr. Loren, Tex Morgan and Forrester. Gracco and Mala, two Indian guides, lead the group into the jungle on the Amazon . A system of tunnels is found that leads to the hidden city.

As the group leaves the tunnel, they are shot at by Indians with arrows. Richardson is hit by a poisoned arrow. Brandon sends Bracco and his helpers back to get an antidote, ammunition and food. Grecco and his group return with Richardson's wife, Stephanie. Grecco and his men flee, Stephanie reaches the jungle camp alone and learns that her husband is dead. Their appearance creates tension in the camp; Forrester and Brandon try to get the widow's attention.

Brandon wants to lead Stephanie out of the jungle. The evening before departure, Stephanie learns that her husband had another wife. Stephanie now feels betrayed by all men. The departure is delayed by a storm. The men try to protect the excavations and discover the treasure. You learn that there is supposed to be a curse on the treasure . Soon afterwards the native Indians attack again. Graham and Forrester die in the fight. When the survivors want to surrender to their fate, Mala, who has brought his tribe to the rescue, attacks the attackers and thus saves the survivors. Stephanie confesses her love for him to Brandon.

Frank S. Nugent of the New York Times finds the composition of the actors a disadvantage. Monotony is the best description for the "best worst film of the year".

The film premiered on January 26, 1940 in the United States. In Germany it first appeared in cinemas in 1952.

Art director Jack Otterson and set decorator Russell A. Gausman were responsible for setting the film . Irene Lentz was responsible for the costumes . Charles Previn was the musical director .
