The Seven Ravens (1993)
The Seven Ravens is a Czech fairy tale film from 1993 , directed by Ludvík Ráza and produced by the Česká Televize company. The film premiered in the Czech Republic in 1993; it was first broadcast on German television on May 1, 1995 on ARD. There is also a German dubbed video from ARCADE as a Euro video. Ludvík Ráza's The Seven Ravens is one of the most frequently broadcast Czech fairy tale films on German television . Internationally, the film is known in the English-speaking world under the title The seven Ravens and under the Czech title Sedmero krkavců .

The girl Bohdanka learns of the fate of her seven brothers, who were cursed by their mother and turned into ravens. She goes out to redeem the brothers. To do this, she is given the task of making seven shirts from yarn that she first has to obtain from nettles . However, she is not allowed to speak a word during production. When Prince Vratislav discovers her in the forest and falls in love with her, he takes her to his castle, which he lives with his sister Milada. Bohdanka continues to work silently on the shirts while the jealous Milada intrigues against her . Bohdanka's newborn child is exchanged for a cat and the child is abandoned by Milada's servant Tasso. Bohdanka is accused of the murder of a servant and of witchcraft and sentenced to death at the stake by Vratislav under the influence of his sister. At the stake, Bohdanka finishes the nettle shirts and calls her brothers before the fire can be lit. The brothers free their sister, Milada and Tasso are arrested. In addition to the reconciliation of the prince couple, the happy ending also includes the return of the seven brothers to their parents.

Close to the text and in every detail, the film corresponds to the fairy tale The Seven Ravens by Božena Němcová . Even Bohdanka as the name of the raven sister goes back to Němcová's seven ravens fairy tale. Němcová's fairy tale is a variant of the fairy tale The Seven Ravens by the Brothers Grimm. However, the brothers' redemption in the Grimmmärchen already succeeds in finding the ravens and climbing the glass mountain, while in Němcová finding the ravens is linked to the difficult task of silence and hosiery weaving. B. with the Brothers Grimm in the fairy tale The Twelve Brothers and in the fairy tale The Six Swans .

In the film music, Petr Hapka chooses an elegiac tone that borrows the floating atmosphere from Johann Sebastian Bach's preludes . Sometimes there are organ sounds reminiscent of Bach chorales. The film music is implemented by synthesizers . The basic melody of the main theme is sung by the mute bohdanka while spinning , weaving and sewing . This song without words creates an audible relationship between the maid Johanna and the Bohdanka, who is deprived of her words: the two girls sing together and work.

The German dubbing was done by Bavaria Film GmbH . In the German version are book and directed by Uwe Gaube , the editorial team led Ute Wollenweber . The processing was done on behalf of the Südwestfunk Baden-Baden .
