action

The 72-year-old Ms. M. buried her husband in the 1910s, whom she had cherished and cared for all her life. She ran the house and looked after her five children, who had remained alive from seven births until they moved out. Well, after the death of her husband, she lived in the house alone. Four of the children went out into the world, only the youngest son stayed in the town, learned to be a printer and had a family that was far too big. Since his apartment was too small for him, he had the idea of moving in with his mother, as there was now a lot of space. But she did not agree with that, because she had decided to shape the last years of her life independently.

She only wanted a small amount of financial support from her children, because the sale of her husband's workshop did not bring much profit. She now began to completely reorganize her life. Twice a week she, who had cooked all her life and only ate the leftovers, went to the pub for lunch. Here she made friends with the young kitchen assistant, with whom she continued to spend her time. To make them happy, she bought her the most beautiful copy in the local hat shop that was available in the shop and which the girl no longer wanted to sell, not even in the cinema, which they now often went to together. Mrs. M. did not attended the tea party in the town, but rather went with her young friend to the cobbler , who, however, a bad reputation had as much a visit from young ladies got in his back room was much to drink and there also the followers of the SPD met to read the newspaper Vorwärts . They made their first ride on a Breeg and went to a horse racing track, where they even placed a bet on the horses.

This life led by her met with opposition from the son who lived nearby and the philistines of her little Wilhelminian town, who looked at her with sometimes astonished and sometimes amused incomprehension and Ms. M. turned her against them. In the last years of her life, she indulged in a little of what she had had to deny herself for seven decades. Even the pastor could no longer dissuade her from her path.
