The Forbidden Woman is an Austrian-German television film by Hansjörg Thurn from 2013 . The love drama with Alexandra Neldel and Mido Hamada in the lead roles is based on the autobiographical novel The Forbidden Woman: My Years with Sheikh Khalid of Dubai by Verena Wermuth.

The photographer and journalist Verena has a well-paid job that she enjoys, and a loving partner. When she meets the Arab Khalid, she falls in love with the charming man who has a great fascination for her. The two of them meet again in Dubai .

Their relationship is put to the test when Verena learns that Khalid is the future Sheikh of the Arab Emirates . She also has to find out that he was promised to the pretty Muslim woman Faizah for a long time. His family and especially his brother Hassan stand between Khalid and Verena.

Verena soon realizes that she has to make a decision: Either she remains the forbidden woman or she decides to live a free life without him. Ultimately, she leaves him, and Khalid marries Faizah.

The feature film is a production by Andreas Bareiß and TV60Film in coproduction with Aichholzer Filmproduktion and a collaboration with Red Arrow International for the television stations Sat.1 and Puls 4 . Alexandra Neldel and Mido Hamada , known from Homeland , could be engaged as the main actors . The film was shot between May 26th and June 27th 2013 in Austria and Morocco .

The film is based on a true incident that the Swiss Verena Wermuth experienced. She fell in love with the future Sheikh of Dubai in 1979 and was his secret love for years. She left him in the early 1990s and returned to Switzerland. She wrote a novel about these experiences and published it in 2007 under the title The Forbidden Woman: My Years with Sheikh Khalid of Dubai .

Wermuth landed a bestseller in Switzerland, of which over 35,000 copies were sold in one month. In Germany 10,000 books have gone over the counter. About the sheikh, whom she names Khalid in the book, she said that today he is "an internationally renowned real estate businessman, married and father of six children." Her sequel Reunion with Sheikh Khalid , which tells of the reunion in May 2008 in Zurich, was released in October 2013 . Verena Wermuth is still on friendly terms with the sheikh.

The premiere of the film took place on October 6, 2013 on the Austrian television station Puls 4. Following the film, the report The Forbidden Woman - Backstage was shown. The premiere saw 150,000 viewers aged twelve and over. The film was shown in Germany on November 26, 2013 on Sat.1 . The broadcast saw 3.25 million viewers, of which 1.45 million were from the advertising-relevant target group , which corresponds to 12.5%.

The film was released on DVD on November 29, 2013.

TV Movie said that the film would trigger "violent heartache in front of beautiful scenery".
