Dieter Lamping

Dieter Lamping (born February 7, 1954 in Lohne (Oldenburg) ) is a German comparator and professor of general and comparative literature at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz.

Career

Dieter Lamping studied general literature , German and pedagogy at the Universities of Cologne and Wuppertal . He received his doctorate in 1981 under Dietrich Weber at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal with the work The Name in the Story . After his habilitation in 1986 ( The lyrical poem. Definitions of theory and history of a genre ), he taught first from 1987 to 1988 as a professor of general literary studies at the University of Wuppertal, then from 1988 to 1993 as visiting professor and professor of general and comparative literature (comparative literature ) at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In 1993 he was offered a professorship for general and comparative literature at the University of Mainz; a simultaneous call to the Gerhart Mercator University Duisburg he refused. Guest lectureships have taken him to Indiana University Bloomington (1997) and Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (2000). For many years he was the spokesman for the Mainz interdisciplinary working group Jewish Studies and founding spokesman for the Center for Intercultural Studies (ZiS) at the University of Mainz. Dieter Lamping is married to the writer and painter Simone Frieling.

Research and main areas of work

Poetry Theory

On the basis of a critical examination of the interweaving of poetry as a genre and the lyrical as an essential characteristic in earlier theories of poetry , Lamping develops a number of systematic redefinitions in Das lyrische Gedicht . The "poem" he sees as "Versrede" or "speech in verse," the "lyrical poem" as a "single speech in verse." He countered the failure of earlier poetry concepts in modern poetry, which he criticized, with a historically oriented testing of his definitions. The interdisciplinary Poetry Handbook published by Lamping brings together articles on the theory, analysis, typology, history and communication of poetry.

Genus theory

The genre-related work includes both general theory of the genre and the development of specific genre definitions. The main concern of the general theoretical work appears to be the reflective mediation of genre-theoretical and genre-historical approaches as well as structural and functional-historical approaches. The individual generic definitions endeavor to (re) construct definitions that are sufficiently precise but as little restrictive as possible. World literature

Lamping has taken a theoretical and practical position in the world literature discussion on several occasions, especially in the course of his preoccupation with the central fields of comparative literature . He is interested in international relationships between authors as well as literary internationality determined by intertextuality. Based on Goethe's conception of the term, Lamping advocates an intertextual, relational understanding of world literature that differs both from a purely additive conceptual understanding that encompasses all literatures of the world and from a normative use in the sense of a canon. World literature is understood as a corpus of texts that either actively refer to one another across linguistic boundaries or passively become the subject of such references.

Intercultural and Jewish Literature

With the anthology Dein aschenes Haar Sulamith , Dieter Lamping presented a representative collection of literary texts depicting the Holocaust for the first time . Lamping examines the contribution of Jewish authors to German literature in the volume Von Kafka bis Celan , which is a differentiated and work-related treatise on Jewish identity in German-language literature of the 20th century. The study of this topic is continued in the anthology Identity and Memory , which asks about the significance of 1945 for Jewish identity. Lamping sees Jewish literature as a paradigmatic example of intercultural literature . Translation theory
