Dieter Vieweger (born May 8, 1958 in Karl-Marx-Stadt ) is a German archaeologist ( prehistoric and early historian ) and theologian ( Old Testament scholar ) who teaches at the universities in Wuppertal and Witten-Herdecke . He is director of scientific institutes in Jerusalem and Amman as well as in Wuppertal

Life

School and study

Dieter Vieweger was expelled from school in 1974 for political reasons ( EOS Theodor Neubauer, Karl-Marx-Stadt). He then attended a state-not recognized educational institution of the Evangelical Church in Saxony (Proseminar Moritzburg ). There he passed his school leaving examination in 1976 . Since he was not allowed to attend university, he studied at the Theological Seminary in Leipzig from 1976 to 1981 .

After the first theological exam in 1981, he completed the vicariate and catechetical training at the Saxon regional church from 1981 to 1982 . From 1982 to 1986 he worked as an assistant at the Theological Seminary of Leipzig and was in 1986 Siegfried Wagner and Wolfram Herrmann at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig with the Scriptures of the Old Testament, the specifics of Appeals Reports Jeremiah and Ezekiel in the context of similar units doctorate .

Parish office and theological teaching

From 1986 to 1989 Dieter Vieweger was pastor of the St. Thomas Choir in Leipzig. In 1987 he was at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig ordained . Archaeological education and academic path

In addition to teaching in Wuppertal, he studied prehistory from 1994 to 1998 at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main , which he completed with Jens Lüning with a doctorate on the subject of the chronology of the necropolis of Tamassos-Lambertis . Among other things, he gained archaeological excavation experience in 1994/1995 during Volkmar Fritz's campaigns in Kinneret ( Tell el-Oreme ) at the northwest end of the Sea of ​​Galilee in Israel .

Since 1991 he has been a liaison professor at the German National Academic Foundation , first at the Humboldt University in Berlin, then at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal . He regularly conducts seminars at the summer academies of the Studienstiftung.

Vieweger has been teaching fundamentals at the University of Witten / Herdecke since 1999 and was given the research professorship in Archeology and Ancient History there in 2002 , which was converted into a visiting professorship in 2009.

Honors

In 2017, Dieter Vieweger received the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class for his services to the German Evangelical Institute for Classical Studies in the Holy Land, Jerusalem and Amman and the Biblical Archaeological Institute (BAI) at the Wuppertal / Bethel University of Applied Sciences .

The Faculty of Humanities and Cultural Studies at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal awarded Vieweger an honorary doctorate in July 2009 .

Director of archaeological institutes

Vieweger has been director of the Biblical Archaeological Institute in Wuppertal since 1999 . The BAI Wuppertal particularly promotes geophysical prospecting in archeology, terrestrial photogrammetry , archeometry (focus: research into the history of technology in ancient crafts) and experimental archeology . The most important archaeological research project ('Gadara Region Project') began in 2001 and comprises the exploration of the Wadi el-Arab and the excavation on the 5000-year-old settlement hill Tall Zira'a in the triangle of Jordan , Syria and Israel .

Dieter Vieweger initiated and managed the restoration and research project “Tourist development of the old excavation under the Church of the Redeemer” in the old city of Jerusalem. The archaeological park under the Church of the Redeemer in Jerusalem was created “through the ages”.

Since 2015 he has been leading the excavations on Mount Zion in Jerusalem (in the Anglican-Prussian Zion Cemetery and in the "Greek Garden").

Since 2017 he has been leading the project “Protection of Cultural Property in Jordan. Digital recording and documentation of the finds in the Archaeological Museum in Amman ”(DOJAM).

Vieweger had been closely associated with the German Evangelical Institute for Classical Studies in the Holy Land (DEI) since 1992. Since 2005 he has been managing director of the German Evangelical Institute for Classical Studies of the Holy Land in Jerusalem and Amman . The institute, founded in 1900, has been headed in its long history by such famous scientists as Gustaf Dalman , Albrecht Alt and Martin Noth . In March 2007 a particularly close cooperation between the German Archaeological Institute and the DEI was initiated with a ceremony at the Foreign Office in Berlin. The DEI thus also became the research center of the German Archaeological Institute .

Commissioned by the Evangelical Church in Germany

Vieweger is the Deputy Provost of the Evangelical German Language Congregation in Jerusalem and coordinates educational work on behalf of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) in Israel. During the change between two officials, he took over the post of provost in Jerusalem for a few months in 2012.

Dieter Vieweger is the initiator of the award-winning peace project “My City - My Story”, which is carried out annually in cooperation between DEI Jerusalem and Schmidt's Girls School , Jerusalem.
