Dirk Schuemer
Dirk Schümer (* 1962 in Soest , North Rhine-Westphalia ) is a German author , translator and correspondent .
Life
Schümer finished his school education with the Abitur in 1981 and then completed a two-year traineeship at the Westfalenpost . Afterwards, Schümer did his community service in Tübingen and then studied German , philosophy and medieval history in Hamburg , Paris and Basel .
At the beginning of the 1990s he worked for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , from January 1991 as an editor in the features section of the humanities. In 1993, after a brief activity as a cultural reporter at Spiegel , he returned to the FAZ and was again active in the features section. In 1995 and 1996 Schümer was visiting lecturer for journalism at the Universities of Essen and the University of Groningen . At the beginning of 1996 he became the FAZ's correspondent for Northern Germany, the Netherlands and Northern Europe, based in Hamburg.
In March 2000 Schümer moved to Venice as a European correspondent for several years . He has written reports and reviews on European, especially Italian, topics. In 2004 he replaced Dietmar Polaczek as the FAZ's sole cultural correspondent for Italy; in the meantime (2009–2012) he worked in a similar position from Vienna.
In 2012 Schümer returned to Venice. After the death of Frank Schirrmacher , editor of the FAZ , he moved to the world group on November 1, 2014, in the same position , for which he reports on European issues, politics, society and culture.
Schümer translated the book Beloved Animal together with Stefanie Peter . The story of an intimate relationship (1994) by Midas Dekkers from Dutch .
Dirk Schümer is an appointed member of the German Academy for Football Culture .

Awards
- In 2014 Dirk Schümer was awarded the Erich Fromm Prize . The award was made for the fact that he “tirelessly calls to mind the humane with his contributions” that connects “the different cultures of Europe”.
