The district of Ninacaca is located in the province of Pasco in the Pasco region in central Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857 and has an area of ​​538 km². The 2017 census counted 4111 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 4112, in 2007 3819. The district administration is located in the small town of Ninacaca, 4140  m high, with 2555 inhabitants (as of 2017). Ninacaca is just 25 km southeast of the provincial and regional capital Cerro de Pasco . In addition to Ninacaca, there are the larger towns of Socorro with 388 inhabitants and Ranyac with 246 inhabitants in the northeast of the district.

Geographical location

The district of Ninacaca is located on the western flank of the Peruvian Central Cordillera in the southeast of the province of Pasco. It has a maximum length in SW-NE direction of 50 km. It extends from the confluence of the Río Ranyac into the Río Huachón in the northeast to the north shore of Lake Junín in the southwest. Several smaller glacial lakes lie at the foot of the mountains. The main town Ninacaca is located in an alluvial fan a few kilometers north of Lake Junín.

The district of Ninacaca borders in the west on the district Vicco , in the northwest on the districts Tinyahuarco and Yanacancha , in the north on the district Ticlacayán , in the northeast on the district Huachón , in the east on the district Paucartambo and in the south on the district Carhuamayo ( province Junín ).
