The Pedro Vilca Apaza district is located in the San Antonio de Putina province in the Puno region in southern Peru . The district was established on March 17, 1962. The district was named after Pedro Vilca Apaza (1741–1782), a rebel leader of the indigenous population.

The district has an area of ​​143 km². The 2017 census counted 1909 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1884, in 2007 it was 2523. The administrative seat of the district is the 3852  m high village of Ayrampuni with 271 inhabitants (as of 2017). Ayrampuni is just 17 km south of the provincial capital Putina .

Geographical location

The Pedro Vilca Apaza district is located in the extreme southwest of the San Antonio de Putina province in the Altiplano, about 30 km north-northwest of Lake Titicaca . The longitudinal extent in NNW-SSE direction is 22 km, the maximum width about 11 km. The area is drained from the Río Llache, a right tributary of the Río Huancané (also Río Putina) to the southeast.

Pedro Vilca Apaza district is bordered on the southwest by the district Chupa , to the west by the district Arapa and in the northwest on the district Azángaro (all three in the province Azángaro ), to the north by the District Putina and the southeast by the districts Huatasani and Huancané (both in the province of Huancané ).
